I don't know if any of you remember what has been going on with my son, but I wanted to know if anyone else has been through this situation. My son is 14 weeks old. At 3-4 weeks he had RSV. He was in ICU for 5 days and seemed to be doing better. A week ago, he started sound raspy and I noticed retracting...(retracting is when they are using their muscles to breathe, you can tell this bc they suck in right under their ribcage and in their neck) I took him to the doctor and they told me to start him back on the albuterol...4 puffs every three hours. He tested negative for RSV this time thank God. Well, he's been at the doctor everyday last week and went yesterday. They said he does sound better but there is still some wheezing and the fever he has was concerning even though it's not high. He sounds so bad that while waiting in the room for the doctor, the dept head came in and asked me alot of questions and listened to him...that was just from hearing him from his own office.. anyhow.. this morning I was waken by my son screaming..not for a bottle, but because he was wheezing and started retracting again...I gave him the albuterol and an hour later, he's fine. They said it's not asthma, though the rsv can sometimes cause it... but, i mean, my son is only having 18-24 oz a day and he doesn't have that all at once either..thats half of normal. He's lost 5 oz since last week and his urine is really yellow now... even so, it seems like I can't get an answer.. im reading stuff online and it's pretty scary but I thought there are alot of women here with children, maybe someone has been through this... maybe it's just a cold..im hoping but i can't help but be nervous and scared for my baby.

How come he's eating less? Because of the wheezing? Could he have a respiratory infection? You need to make them figure it out if he isn't getting better.

Yes he is eating less because he can't breathe when he is taking his bottle. It's not formula thats the problem bc I have tried pedialite and water. I know they are doing what they can, especially with him being so little but I guess I just feel like some tests should be done..like CBC and chest xray repeated. He is tricare standard right now so I considered taking him to a pediatrician out in town...

PS they said to begin with that it could be a viral infection and bc of his history with rsv this is how he will react to colds and such...I dunno though. I guess I am just scared...

I would take him out in town. Have them start all over and get the tests done that you think need to be done.

RSV can take a long time to get over completely. It sounds like he is still recovering from it. When they are having respiratory issues they will eat less as they work more to eat and breath.

allergies to cows milk can cause wheezing. But he has a fever which says infection. I hope you find answers fast. Its scary to see baby's sick!!

Gaven had this issue. He has been on albuetrol/flovent since he was 3months old. Have you asked them to put you on a steriod? Gaven uses predinsone. It helps with the swelling and it makes it easier for them to breathe. It works wonders! Good luck :tu

See about getting a liquid form of the inhaler medication. I hope your little man starts feeling better soon. But he does sound like he's dehydrated too.

My daughter has been off and on a nebulizer since she was 2mths old.
She weezes and coughs and can't hardly breath and it comes out of the blue. She is on albuterol 3x a day and flovent through an inhaler once a day when it flares up. They keep saying its allergies and maybe asthma, but she's too young to test for it supposedly.
I would ask for a civi to check it out.

thanks for the replies.. they did test him for RSV again, it was negative.. they said that with his history this is just a reaction.. I guess what disturbs me about it is that he isn't eating or peeing all that much and his cough... he has had a temp too.. I know babies get sick..but I dunno, my kids have never been sick like this and I guess I just like to have answers when things don't show some sign of letting up... it seems like after trying all they have and it isn't working they'd do something different... but thanks for the advice.. i will look into all of that more..

I hope he doesn't have pneumonia. You son not eating drinking much, the high temp and the coughing are all signs of the bacterial pneumonia Ethan had. :(

I'm not sure how the tests are for RSV, but do the tests include x-rays?!?

I know how you are feeling. My daughter was in the hospital for a week with RSV at 5 weeks. They did the albuterol stuff on her as well as some steroids. One thing I was told to do when she was in the hospital was to put her on her stomach as much as possible even if she doesnt like it. The doc told me that when they are on their stomachs, they use a different part of their lungs that they dont use any other time. He said that the more she uses that part of her lungs, the stronger they will become and the easier it will be for her to recover. She has the weezing thing too, but not that bad. I say try the tummy time more and more often, and if you are around him, then try it during nap time. I would also suggest a cool mist humidifier. That really really helps to break up all the crap in the lungs and nose and stuff and will help make it easier for him to breath. I also know that if he gets really bad with the weezing, then you can take him into the bathroom and turn the shower on to the hottest it can get, and just sit with him in the steam. That is a quick fix. I hope all works out for you!! I'm here if you need to talk...just feel free to PM me and I will write back ASAP! Good luck!!

thanks.. we have tried all of that! When he is on his tummy he does drain more..so I take him in the mist of the shower and then onto his tummy.. it helps but not enough.... I think I may start doing some chest pt's on him.. that should help loosen it all up and get everything moving around... thanks again guys.. He goes back in the morning and I will keep you updated! :pray

They did a chest xray 12 days ago...it was normal.. but he's gotten worse since then hence the reason I want another one.. I mean 12 days is enough time for pnuemonia to be a secondary infection which would cause the fever and him not getting better... I noticed tonight that the predisone has helped with the wheezing but he IS still retracting...he is still coughing bad too.. but, I am thinking it will all resolve soon enough.. but I still want the tests run just in case..
