Students can't stomach bare-bellied photo, so they swipe newspapers

FRAMINGHAM - Nearly 1,000 copies of the Framingham State College student newspaper were stolen by students embarrassed by the journal's front-page photo of them as bare-bellied FSC lacrosse fans attending a recent home game.

MW Now: Paper chasten?

"I guess they were embarrassed about how they looked in the photo," said college spokesman Peter Chisholm.

The color picture, which ran in the April 27 edition of the student newspaper, The Gatepost, shows seven women in tank tops and low-rise shorts standing on bleachers during a women's lacrosse home game. In a show of school spirit, the women had the letters of the name of a woman lacrosse player painted over their stomachs.

But school spirit seemingly faded after someone got a look at the front-page photo, which led some of the FSC students in the photo to swipe close to half the paper's 2,000-copy press run featuring the picture on April 27 and over the following weekend.

According to Desmond McCarthy, an English professor and the paper's faculty adviser, school members said some fans depicted in the photo believed they looked fat.

"This is the most stupid reason the paper has been stolen," said McCarthy, who noted editions of The Gatepost were stolen four times in the last 15 years.

One student who admitted taking the papers gave campus police a stack of about 130 copies, said McCarthy. The papers were taken from drop boxes in dorms across the campus and hidden in dorm rooms.

McCarthy and Megan Turner, The Gatepost's editor in chief, said the students responsible for stealing the paper should be required to pay for reprints of the lost papers. Turner said printing 500 copies can cost about $630.

"I think it's incredibly disappointing" the papers were stolen, said Turner. "They were in a public place ... and doing a very public thing."

Chisholm said campus police quickly learned who stole the papers when one of the students in the picture turned herself in and the students admitted to absconding with the journals, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in March.

The college police will not seek criminal charges against the students, said Chisholm. The college is still investigating and the students could face judicial action by the school, he said.

"The college doesn't condone actions such as this. We think it was a childish thing to do," said Chisholm.

Turner said since the papers were stolen last month. There has been no public comment from FSC administration regarding the incident.

In a follow-up interview, Chisholm said his statements to the press are the college's official position on the matter and that administrators are "very irritated by this."

"The campus is not going to stand for this," said Chisholm. "Hopefully, for these young ladies, they'll start maturing."

McCarthy said the theft infringed on the First Amendment rights of the paper's staff and FSC students, plus pointed to an unhealthy attitude on body image.

"I feel bad that a group of women took the paper because of how they looked," said McCarthy.

If they were worried about showing their bellies, why did they wear mid-drifs and paint on them? I don't understand.

And uh, if those girls are fat, then I am a cow, and I am not a cow, so those girls are not fat.

That's what I thought. On the other hand, the school paper should have asked permission from the girls in the photo to print it.

The girls actually loved having their picture taken, and asked to have their picture taken. Then didn't like the way they looked, so stole them. If they didn't want that attention brought to them, they shouldn't have dressed that way :shrug

I think they dressed that way to have fun, and then regretted it, but they never should have been embarassed to that level. They are college students having fun, and none of them are fat!

because it was a public sporting event so they don't have to ask permission

Sad that those girls feel that way. From what I saw about it, they were asked and said sure, then saw it and didn't like it. It was on CNN or one of those this morning.

I don't buy for one second that these girls were ashamed of their bodies......or else they never would have felt comfortable enough to be in public like that in the first place:puzz
