Paris Hilton says she's 'ready to face the consequences'

By SANDY COHEN
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Five days after she was sentenced to jail, Paris Hilton says she understands the seriousness of driving under the influence and that she is not "above the law."

"I am ready to face the consequences of violating probation," Hilton said in a statement released Wednesday by her new attorney, DUI specialist Richard Hutton. "I do not expect to be treated better than anyone else who violated probation. However, my hope is that I will not be treated worse."

The 26-year-old socialite was represented by attorney Howard Weitzman during her probation-violation hearing Friday. A receptionist at Hutton's Pasadena office declined to say when Hilton retained his services.

Hutton did not return repeated calls for comment.

Hilton said she released the statement because "I feel the need to correct what I believe are misperceptions about me."

"I absolutely realize how serious driving under the influence is," she said. "I could not live with myself if anyone was injured or killed while I was driving while impaired. Clearly, no one should — no matter how slightly."

The notorious party girl, who parlayed her pampered lifestyle into a reality TV show and a pop CD, was sentenced to 45 days in county jail for violating the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case. A judge ordered her to report to the women's jail in suburban Lynwood by June 5, adding that she will not be allowed any work release, furloughs, use of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring instead of time behind bars.

Hilton's original legal team, headed by Weitzman, filed a notice with the court on Friday indicating their intent to appeal the decision.

:vent This whole thing is stupid. She needs to suck it up and go to jail. Then maybe next time she will actually realize that she isn't above the law.

I heard on the radio this morning that they are holding protests at some schools here in SD! They said that she shouldn't have to go to such a "horrible" prison.

Makes me so angry! Any other person and no one would care.

Good for her. I am glad that she is taking the responsibility handed to her for her actions. Maybe she will come out of this with some new insight to life.

A "regular" person would have been charged with a DUI in the first place, instead of reckless driving. She got lucky there, but wasted her chance by driving (and being pulled over) not just once but TWICE! Both times just had to sign a statement acknowledging she wasn't supposed to be driving, her "I didn't know any better..." sob story is ridiculous. She showed a complete lack of respect for the court by not even bothering to show up on time, clearly she gets it from her mother, who had several inappropriate outbursts during the hearing. She needs to do her time and thank her lucky stars she doesn't have to be there any longer than 45 days. Celebrities really irritate me!

Seriously...I hate how normal folks get the axe but because ppl know your name they give it to you easy..just like with the governor or whatever who got in the car accident and wasn't wearing his seatbelt and he OFFERED to pay the fine..he shoulda been fined either way..a regular person wouldve been.

I heard this morning on the radio, that it was actually Paris' mom that was requesting the pardon from the governor.

I am glad that she is owning up to her mistake though. It takes a strong person to do that, especially when she's been given everything she ever wanted.

She isn't special, she should get the same treatment as everyone else. I don't give a crap whether she admits it or not. She needs to get an education with all that money of hers :nutts

Huh. So she'll accept the consequences, but she's still filing an appeal?

I think she's just saying that so she can get pity from the fans to support her in not going to jail. I think its about time that she owns up to what she did.
