May 10, 2007 -- In a heartbreaking murder that has baffled Long Island cops, a hardworking dad was found fatally shot in the chest Tuesday afternoon - with his 3-year-old son sleeping at his side.
Police said suspicions were raised when Carlton Shaw, 38, of East Patchogue, failed to pick up his 5-year-old daughter, Colleen, from her day-care center at around 4 p.m. Tuesday, and employees there called Shaw's neighbor.
The neighbor found the body outside a side door just before 5 p.m. Shaw had been shot once in his chest, cops said.
The victim's 3-year-old son, Carlton Jr., was found asleep next to his dad. Police said Shaw - who worked long hours as a line cook at three Long Island restaurants - had no criminal history or contacts with law enforcement.
Police said there was no sign of forced entry or obvious signs of a robbery at Shaw's tidy home. Police towed his black Volkswagen Jetta to see if it offered any clues.
Griselda Amaya, his devastated girlfriend of seven years and mother of his children, said she knew of no possible motive for the murder.
She was being comforted by neighbors yesterday as she struggled to explain the killing to her two children.
Amaya praised Shaw as an industrious worker whose main focus was to provide for his young family and future wife. "He just worked, worked, worked," she said in soft, broken English. "He had three jobs."
Police said they were still trying to piece together the sequence of events that led to Shaw's killing and whether his son, who was not harmed, had witnessed the shooting.
