Where do you think it stems from? Ive heard that some poeple feel the way they do becuase of surroundings, or how they were brought up. But what do you think? Do you think people actually chose to be reacist, and who they are racist towards? Or do you think its just how they are? I dont know if I am even wording this right.

BUt I was watching a show on tv last night abotu racism, and how it comes about. So I was just curious as to what you all think.

I think people choose the ignorance that is racism.

I think it's because there are just some people in the world that believe they are owed something.

It's definately ignorance.

Yes you choose to be racist or not. It's not something you were born with. If you grew up in a family that was racist.. that does not mean you have to be.

:agree I totally agree... It is most definitely ignorance... and you are not born that way.. My father was the biggest racist there was and * I * decided to NOT go that route... He said that I was a dissappointment and I turned to him and said LIKEWISE ...

Definitely ignorance. A timy bit of knowledge is a lot more dangerous than none at all - most racists tend to know a tiny bit about the race their prejudice is focused on and the prejudice forms from a basis of assumptions and fear. I do think people can choose to be racist and who they are racist towards, and I think the media fuels the fire in many circumstances.

Definitely ignorance. My family is racist. I was ingaged to a man of another race and my dad actually told me people would stone our kids and that interacial marriage was the reason of the Holicost (sp?). It ended up being a bad relationship, but that had nothing to do with racial differences.

it's not always ignorance. if all of your personal experiences with a particular group have been negative or whatever then of course you will have that stereotype and be racist. though many times it is because of ignorance.

Fear, Ignorance and/or Personal Experience.

Fear because some people are afraid to change the way they think or what they were taught growing up.

Ignorance because people who don't take individuals for who they are, rather than what race/religion/etc are ignorant in their thinking.

Person Experience is just that - experiences, good or bad, influence people.

I think alot of it is based on expiriences and sterotypes that tend to be true. I guess one could call me some what racisit, but im not racists towards a certain group or people, but there are certain people from every group that i CAN NOT stand...and with that said, i think it all comes down to apperance and how you present yourself to other people

I totally think it is in part of how you were grown up and what you grew up around...If you constantly hear your dad talking bad about mexican's and saying the N word and how terrible they are etc..then you are more likely to get some of that rubbed off on you...My dad is a bit racist he would totally disown me and my sister if we were ever to marry someone of a different race but my mother is not like that so we got both ends of it...we also heard my mom always tell us that that is just how my dad was raised so me and my sister didn't get all that hate rubbed off on us because our mom taught is the right thing and taught us to ignore our dad!

i think enviorment influences, BUT ppl have a choice to change what they thought they knew. and i know it could come from personal experience. BUT ppl have a choice to make things better, and if they don't want to change thier thoughts or ways for the better then they are ignorant.
