View Full Version : what extracurriculars
harrisonsdream 05-12-2007, 12:03 PM do your kids do? when did they start them?
ETA: we will probably have our kids do karate because dh did it and loved it and the discipline it instilled in him. i also want my girls to do gymnastics if possible because i did it when i was little and it gave me a ton of great balance and poise. i dunno i would like my kids to do something through school to either a club or a sport like football (dh would love a boy to do that), etc ya know but i'm worried about pulling them in to many directions.
Heather 05-12-2007, 12:18 PM My son did taekwondo for about 9 months when he was 5. He liked it at first then I ened up having to pay $400 to finish out the contract and he didn't even want to go. Lily did dance for 2 or 3 months last summer, she was 3 1/2.I'm looking into swimming lessons for both my kids.
sgmwife1 05-12-2007, 12:21 PM DS and DD both are involved with music. DD has played the French Horn and Mellophone for the past 8 years and DS is a percussionist for the past 4.
DS also plays golf, soccer, and is an avid chess player.
DD is has been in dance since she was 2. She is now 8. She has been in Girl Scouts since Kindergarden. Then she also does sports like softball, soccer and cheer on and off since she was about 5.
We started at 5 and did Tball (I was a coach). Then there was flag football shortly after (again I coached). Then there was fall ball here in FL. And the last thing was soccer (dh coached).
Ashnbri 05-12-2007, 09:40 PM DH wants to do the karate thing with him as well!
I did a Mommy and me music class starting when Kota was 18 months old, then she started dance and still does it she was 3 when she began, she does soccer right now and we do parent/child swimming.
I try to really let her do what she wants without being OVERscheduled.
My younger daughter does swimming parent/child classes as well and will start the same dance class when she is 3 next year.
Caimbrie 05-12-2007, 10:02 PM We haven't started Alex in anything yet but this coming year we will be.
As long as your kids are doing it because they WANT to and you're not pushing them to do it, it's fine :)
Amber V 05-12-2007, 10:07 PM I start my kids at about 3-4 years. My oldes was 4 but my ds will probably be 3.
My oldest has done dance and Girls Scouts so far. She wants to get back into dance this fall.
I plan to put my ds I would like to put in Gymnastics this fall.
I will be putting my oldest through swim lessons this summer. She did them when she was little and then we moved so now we need to start over again.
Sarah 05-12-2007, 10:12 PM Emily takes guitar lessons and she does Girl Scouts. When we move, she also wants to either be in softball or cheer leading
Noah wants to play football, so we will get him in some sort of pee wee football league when we move.
Emily started doing extracurricular activities when she was 4. She was in cheer leading when we were in San Diego. She loved it!
Lilithdrff 05-12-2007, 10:51 PM My girls dont do anything currently, but I'm going to put them in swimming classes this summer (they are 4 and 1 1/2).
MichelleB 05-12-2007, 11:10 PM I want to give Taylor a chance to do a lot of things. I want her to try Girlscouts because I LOVED it when I was younger. And I really want her to do ballet, more for my own selfish reason (I want the cute pictures! :P ) I would also like her to try some sports or gymnastics.
Michelle 05-12-2007, 11:18 PM They have both done gymnastics, tap and ballet, piano, and they will do soccer this summer. My oldest takes ukulele at school.
Krisha 05-13-2007, 12:25 AM Our son is almost 12 and he plays baseball, football, wrestling (took this year off) basketball and he raced dirtbikes for 6 years. He started baseball at 4, football at 7, basketball at 9, wrestling at 4 and dirt bike racing at 5. He's an all around athlete.
Our middle daughter does competition cheerleading, girl scouts, and gymnastics. She started gymnastics at 4, cheer just this past year, and scouts at 5. She now wants to take on hip hop dance but that will have to wait until we get to Va. and find a gym.
Traci 05-13-2007, 12:50 AM Both my kids started bowling at 6. Now DD is 10 and DS is 7. They love it!
Chevy_Gurl 05-13-2007, 09:38 AM Anya did a season in soccer :no WASTE of money. But she's been doing cheer for 3 yrs now and love it. This summer she will be taking off of cheer and taking gymnastics and tumbling.
Schyular has been doing Tball since he was 5.
Timmy has done soccer. He wants to do tball and football this fall along with gymnastics.
All kids take swimming lessons. Anya wants to join a swim team when she gets older too.
