An east Houston woman is being held for questioning as police investigate the death of her 2-year-old daughter, who was brought to a hospital today with severe burns, a child welfare official said.

The 24-year-old woman was taken into custody after her daughter was brought by ambulance this morning to Memorial Hermann Hospital, said Estella Olguin, spokeswoman for Child Protective Services.

It could not be confirmed this evening whether charges had been filed.

The girl had suffered second- and third-degree burns on her feet, the backs of her legs, her buttocks and her genitals, said Houston police spokesman Dave Ortiz.

The girl, whose name has not been released, died about 2 p.m.

Olguin said the mother told doctors that her daughter had fallen into a campfire during a family barbecue on a beach.

Doctors said, however, that the burns appeared to have been caused by immersion in extremely hot water, Olguin said. They also said the burns were not fresh and that infection had set in.

Olguin added that the mother was vague about exactly when and where the girl was injured.

CPS has taken custody of the woman's other child, a 9-month-old boy, pending the outcome of the investigation, Olguin said.

The girl who died had been taken into CPS custody shortly after her birth because her mother had failed two drug tests, Olguin said.
