View Full Version : Who dries their laundry outside? leftover 05-28-2007, 11:22 PM How much do you figure it saves you on your electric bill? Green~Mammy 05-29-2007, 12:06 AM I do and I have NO idea because it is higher in the summer anyway due to the swamp cooler being on. Victoria 05-29-2007, 12:11 AM Believe it or not...my PARENTS got their first dryer in 1994. They originally bought it, so that they could dry clothes when it was rainy or too cold outside to dry anything. Yeah...that idea lasted about a month before my siblings and I complained about it...LOL!!! Needless to say, I'm TOO lazy to dry my clothes outside. I don't like that "starchy" feeling. It's kind of like cloth diapering versus disposables. KWIM?! Saving money is all about what's convenient for you. define 05-29-2007, 05:32 AM I don't but I have a lot of family in Hawaii that does. I'm not sure how much it saves them on their electricity a month though. VinnysGirl 05-29-2007, 01:25 PM My grandmother dries clothes outside whenever she can... she saves a good deal of money because in the winter they use a wood burning fireplace to keep the house warm and heaters instead of the central heat and the dryer really does eat up the electricity. I like the way her sheets and towels smell after being dried outside, but they are too ROUGH for me! I use my concentrated downy in my dryer so I'm spoiled! LOL! Jennie 05-29-2007, 01:52 PM My parents do, but I don't. I hate that hard starchy feeling it gets and I'm paranoid about what might have crawled on my clothes while they were outside. Del 05-29-2007, 01:56 PM You can set up little racks and dry clothes inside too, as long as you put a towel or mat down. That way you don't have to worry about bugs or anything. We used to do that with delicates or things we didn't want to shrink. And wood heat can be pretty expensive itself, what with the cost of wood and all. (Little heaters, by nature, are electric, and can jack up your electric bill too.) Jennygirl 05-29-2007, 06:44 PM Our bill isnt that high, our dryer usually takes little time to dry the clothing... rosebud* 05-29-2007, 07:03 PM I don't only because it always smelled like dirt when i dried things outside. and most places I lived it was either too wet or too humid for things to even dry. CoffeeGirl 05-29-2007, 07:31 PM I dry 80% of my clothes in the dryer but I do hang dry certain items on hangers in my laundry room but not outside though-My Mom did it as I was growing up & it makes things so hard & rough & stiff, I don't like that Shaky 05-29-2007, 10:16 PM We did back home in Puerto Rico for most of the time I lived there, I could never go back to that though. My shirt were always toasted and kinda wrinkley. We've been living in this house for over 4 months and our electric bill is still the same than when we were in the apartment so not a big bill. cricketswife 05-29-2007, 11:31 PM i would put clothes on the line when i was taking my laundry to my parents house to do it back in wisconsin. i haven't since then pretty much only because we haven't had any place to do it. i'll start again once we get our house. it does make things starchy and whatnot, but my jeans need to be line dried anyway, so no matter what they're starchy, so i'll deal. MIKOSWIFEY 05-29-2007, 11:56 PM I hang some of my things to dry on a drying rack on the porch sometimes (things that can't be in the dryer). I use vinegar (about 1/3 cup) in the rinse cycle and it gets rid of all the soap residue that causes your clothes to get stiff and rough when hung outside. I Loooooooove the smell clothes that are line-dried have! My mom line dries most of her clothes, and they save about $50 a month on their electricity bill. Bex 05-29-2007, 11:56 PM i think my great grandma did :D Jennygirl 05-30-2007, 04:07 PM When I lived at home, i used too... I would make sure i used liquid fabric softner and super rinse them and then dry just certain things. It does wonders for white clothes! *~*Cori*~* 05-30-2007, 04:28 PM My parent's do it in the summer but I don't like the way it makes my clothes so stiff and starchy... Maybe if I fluffed them on the dryer afterwards Miss B Hav'n 05-30-2007, 10:26 PM I love the smell of line dried laundry but can't stand the texture of it. No matter what softening agent I use in the wash it just doesn't do the job when I line dry. *~*Terri*~* 05-31-2007, 09:39 AM To solve that "rough" feeling you can throw your clothes in the dryer for about 10-15 minutes with a couple of dryerballs after you line dry them. I do that and it works WONDERS! elie 05-31-2007, 11:41 AM While growing up, my mom and grandma's did. But I don't, like some of the ladies have said, I don't like the stiff feeling of clothes when left outside to dry. AmericanGurl1204 05-31-2007, 08:04 PM my grandma still dries the laundry outside..but i dont do it. for 1 thing, i hardly ever go out on the balcony cuz of bugs..2-i usually put certain clothes on a hanger and then hang them up on chairs..but for the most part, everything goes in the dyer. |
