View Full Version : Potties...
Rileysmom 05-31-2007, 10:17 PM So I have read up on potty training and Riley is a bit young, but we have some extra money coming in here soon and I want to buy him a potty. So my question is, what kind of potty did you use? A mini one? A little seat on the toilet? A mini urinal? I am just trying to see if there is anything we should avoid or anything that is spectacular.... TIA!
Heather 05-31-2007, 10:29 PM I've found that the little seats that go on the regular toilet work really well and are much less disgusting. Some kids get so use to using a potty chair they won't use a regular toilet. I think potty chairs are nasty, JMO though. I bought a little seat to go over the toilet at wal-mart for $10.
Oh I want to add those magic musical ones aren't worth the money if you ask me. When I had to deal with potty chairs I filled the bath tub with HOT bleach water once a week, soaked the potties and after the 2nd week the musical one didn't work. Potty chairs get really gross no matter what gender is using them.
MIKOSWIFEY 05-31-2007, 10:30 PM OK this is the one I bought. IT IS AWESOME. My son loves to sit on it. He loves it. I've seen my friends' potties, and they have the toilet converters and other seats (one had a urinal because it was cute but it got NASTY), and they have probs with emptying them, or cleaning them, or the kid gets their bum pinched while sitting or the pee shield is too big, doesnt work, too small, etc.
This one has none of those problems for my boy. It's not got such a large pee shield that a girl will have a problem with it, either.

I like it because since DD is so young, she can sit on it at the same time Im going so she can get the hang of trying to use the potty!
kaytee 05-31-2007, 10:54 PM Little seat on the regular toilet worked best here.
MelissaMc424 05-31-2007, 10:59 PM little seat on the toilet is working.. DD has one for each bathroom.. sesame street themed...
She had this one and didn't really ever want to use it: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=br_1_16/602-8448928-9235839?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B0009JOTAE
Kaymara 05-31-2007, 11:03 PM We used a regular little potty in front of ours. It was like 9.99 by safety first. He learned how to in that and now uses a mini seat over the toilet. He goes in there and puts the mini seat on there himself, climbs up and goes. I found that using the little potty to start helped us because it got him used to what he was doing without having to climb up making it more difficult to start
aubrey 05-31-2007, 11:08 PM It seems like every kid prefers something different. Some are afraid of the big toilet and prefer a separate potty chair, others do fine w/ the kind that go on the regular toilet. They aren't expensive, so I actually recommend getting both, or one that's a chair where the seat lifts off and fits on the regular toilet.
Aymber 05-31-2007, 11:09 PM We just used a little seat on the big one.We had bought a potty but the only wanted to use it for a step stool.
Kristin 05-31-2007, 11:36 PM This is the one I have for Emilee

Ethan had a kind of plain one similar to that and Elizabeth had one that was called "A throne of my own" and it made flushing noises and came with a book and it scared the CRAP out of her all the time LOL
PrincessBlue505 05-31-2007, 11:50 PM We have a musical one for DD and she loves it. Now she doesn't actually use it yet without her diaper on. But it has gotten her used to flushing and using the "toilet paper roll" it has on there, and she likes to sit on it fully clothed. It's gotten her used to the idea. But when I put her on there without a diaper, she freaks. I tried it today, actually. Then I put her on the big potty and she was fine! So now I have to get her a little one that fits on the big one, I guess. I told DH about it and was like, guess that little on was a waste of money. But he doesn't think so as it seems to have gotten her used to the whole potty idea and of the different potty functions and stuff.....
piggypunkinetta 06-01-2007, 12:13 AM We have the kind that goes on the regular toilet. I don't like to clean the pee out of the potty chair, yuck. My kids never used the seat for more than a month. It only took us a weekend with each kid to potty train so the potty chair would have been a waste of money.

I agree about the magic musical ones. We have one and it gets disgusting if it doesn't get cleaned often but I've slowly stopped letting my daughter use it. More so, I took the batteries out of it so it wouldn't play the "music" when she would go because when we were first introducing the potty to her, she would constantly put something in the way so it would go off.

Very true. I was going to suggest the same. We bought a potty chair at first then eventually bought a potty seat because she would need to get used to the regular potty for when we are out and about.

That's the one we have, but that little bump on the front she accidentally sits down on and gets mad.. LOL
SO we're trying for the adapter on the big potty :)
Lilithdrff 06-01-2007, 09:58 AM We have this, just in a different color:

We never actually used it as a floor chair though (Katryvna is being potty trained so late that floor chairs are just too low to the ground and uncomfortable for her). The whole thing pulls apart, one half becoming a step-stool, the other becomes what goes on the regular toilet seat. We don't use the catch-cup.

That is the same one we have. I've found that some kids are scared to sit on the big potty right away. The mini ones you can move around the house, and it's less intimidating.
Rileysmom 06-01-2007, 10:29 AM Thanks for all the input, ladies! I think we are going to get a little one and the toilet one too, so that he can gradually get used to it. We are going to put it in the bathroom and just show him to sit down and copy us...
I really like the Laugh and Learn potty, and Riley does well with rewards, so I think that's what we'll try.
Thanks again, ladies! :hugs
mara_jade81 06-01-2007, 06:12 PM I have a friend who bought a potty bench from Toys R Us and all the kids love it.
