:wowsersI always use hand sanitizer and I put some on Colin at times if we are outside or in a store or somewhere that we can't wash hands... I tell him not to lick it but he's a kid! I got this in an email and just thought "why didn't i know better" but here you go.. The story (as stated) was apparently verified.

I am editing to add that if you read the snopes page about it, it states its true and its origin but it does say that some of the facts in this particular case were changed like the 85% alcohol level...

: Hand Sanitizer info - Please read

This story was verified at: http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/sanitizer.asp

Yesterday, my youngest daughter, Halle , who is 4, was rushed to the emergency room by her father for being severely lethargic and incoherent. He was called to her school by the school secretary for being "very VERY sick."
He told me that when he arrived, Halle was barely sitting in the chair. She couldn't hold her own head up and when he looked into her eyes, she couldn't focus them. He immediately scooped her up and rushed her to the ER, and then called me.

When we got there, they ran blood test after blood test and did x-rays, every test imaginable. Her white blood cell count was normal, nothing was out of the ordinary. The ER doctor told us that he had done everything that he could do so he was sending her to Saint Francis for further tests.

Right when we were leaving in the ambulance, her teacher came to the ER and, after questioning Halle 's classmates, we found out that she had licked hand sanitizer off her hand. Hand sanitizer, of all things. But it makes sense. These days they have all kinds of different scents and when you have a curious child, they are going to put all kinds of things into their mouths.
When we arrived at Saint Francis, we told the ER doctor there to check her blood alcohol level, and yes we did get weird looks, but they did it. The results showed her blood alcohol level was 85% -- six hours after we first took her. There's no telling what it would have been if we would have requested it at the first ER. Since then, her school and a few surrounding schools have taken this out of the classrooms of all the lower grade classes, but what's to stop middle and high schoolers from ingesting the stuff?
After doing research on the internet, we have found out that it only takes 3 squirts of the stuff to be fatal in a toddler. For her blood alcohol level to be so high was to compare someone her size to drinking something 120 proof.

The only thing that disturbs me about this is why a school wouldn't call 911 then call a parent.. but I dunno...

I agree, I would have thought they would have called 9-1-1 and then let the parents know. That is really scary though. Here in town, there was a local teacher rushed to the hospital because some jackass kids squirted this stuff in his coffee as a "joke." They were arrested for assault.

Holy wowzers!! I have a little thing of purex sanitizer on my keyring, and I use it often when we're out. DD always wants some so I let her have it - it's not uncommon for me to just give her my keys while she's sitting in a cart or whatever and she just goes to town. This is GOOD information!!

There should really be a warning label.

Becca I do the same thing!! It really scared me because there are times when Colin will play with the bottle (the one with the snap top) and I wouldn't normally think twice about it..

Hand sanitizer is generally safe. Its supposed to be dry before you have any contact with food or your mouth.

But still, there does need to be a warning on the label or something.

85% blood alcohol level? She would be dead. She had to have swallowed a LOT of hand sanitizer for that.

I never would have thought hand sanitizer would have that high of a blood alcohol level...I used to give it to my God-daughter all the time (Heaven forbid I used something she didn't :lol). That's good to know, I'm gonna have to pass that on to people. Thanks for posting.

Also, hand sanitizer evaporates almost IMMEDIATELY after putting it on the hand. In order to be affected by it, like the teacher was, you have to ingest it DIRECTLY into your mouth. It sounds to me like the little girl swallowed a lot of it.

My son is always LICKING his hands after I rub that stuff in (it's mostly dry at that point though). He plays with the little snap top bottles I have all over the house sometimes too. I knew it wasn't GOOD for him, but I didn't realize it could be fatal. Those are going out of reach from now on. Thanks for the warning!

I'm not screwy. I think the stories that try to cause mass panic in parents are screwy.

I wonder if soon one will have to show the cashier an ID to purchase hand sanitizer. I had to show my ID to purchase cough syrup!!!!!

That was my point. Stories like that are always exaggerated and end up in situations like you just said.

Parents are just neurotic as a whole, and I speak from experience. :yes

Oh well, better to be careful than to find your kid drunk off sanitizer right? :)

Sure.

Better to keep them locked in their room than to find them:
electrocuted from a socket
run over in the street after having figured out how to get out the front door
kidnapped while playing on the jungle gym
snatched up by a golden eagle and carried off to a bird's nest
drowned in the bathtub
with broken legs after slipping on a wet spot in the kitchen

Yep. Keep that sanitizer away from 'em :thumbsup

:lmao The eagle thing :rofl

My son really does try to eat that stuff though. I found him sucking on the pump kind a few days ago, and that stuff seemed to be a little emptier so I had to watch him closely for a while. Dang kids will eat anything. :screwy
