View Full Version : Help me help my husband!
tanyaann 06-06-2007, 06:08 PM :sigh
My husband has been home form Iraq for a little over year and half. And in this time home, he returned fairly like himself. We got married, moved and started a new unit.
Since things have slowed down, my husband has conveyed to me that he wants to commit suicide. I am an RN, a Vet with the Army. I have gotten him see a doctor once! He is pushing further and further away lately. He is a Corpmen with the Marines in Quatinco. So looking weak is not option for him (he says). He was told me that he has survivors guilt, and he doesn't understand why came home alive and in tact. We go to church and the pastor has offerd to speak with him. He has yet to schedule an apointment. He dodges my calls, and avoids eye contact most of the tme. All this is coming from a guy how was funny and always laughing. Like watching Robin Williams turn into Al Pacino. I need some resources that hopfully someone here can help me with. My husband will only talk with someone whom as been there (iraq) and understands the crap that goes on there. I have had no luck here in Manassas Va. Can anyone help me help my husband?
Thank you.

germanchick 06-06-2007, 06:17 PM First off welcome to SOS. I don't have any advice but I think Laurie119 could help you out with your questions,
Elizabeth 06-06-2007, 06:20 PM I am not going through this exactly, but i have dealt with a suicidal family member and we have had him admitted to the hospital a few times out of fear that he would hurt himself or has already made an attempt.
CassieR1202 06-06-2007, 06:35 PM I just wanted to say that my thoughts and prayers are with you, and your husband.
faerygirl06 06-06-2007, 07:44 PM Oh sweetie I am so sorry!!! My DB and I are having similar trouble. I can tell you though that the ladies on here are amazing and will help you in anyway they can. My DB has PTSD and is suffering from survivors guilt as well. It is hard for them to admit that they are having trouble........I know. All I can say is try to be there for him as much as you can. Remind him you love him, and are there for him. He needs you now more then ever, even though they won't say it.......they do!

chelsea<3josh 06-06-2007, 08:36 PM welcome to sos. i do not have direct experience with this with my db but i have dealt with a suicidal best friend, we had to admit her, she wanted to go because she knew she was a danger to herself, she got help and is much better now, and i also deal with kids at work some of them have suicidal problems. mostly he really really needs to seek help for this. that is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength to help himself...i know he does not see it that way. i would highly encourage him to get help, tell him you will go with him, be his support let him know how much you love him and how much you support him and tell him you want him to get help so he can get better! good luck we are all here for you!! :goodvibes :goodvibes

Wow, so much of that sounds familiar. My husband is retired now, but when he was still in the Navy, the stigma weighed heavily on him so he didn't get the help he needed when he needed it, so I think that probably contributed to his condition now. It will only get worse if he doesn't get some kind of treatment. It sounds to me like the comments about suicide could be a cry for help so he doesn't have to admit to his "weaknesses" for lack of a better word. I would talk to his command, or the chaplain. Let them know what is going on and they will make him get help. My husband right now is in an inpatient treatment unit for his PtSD. A couple of weeks ago he lost it and got suicidal and asked me to take him to the hospital. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do to admit that I wasn't enough and that he needed more help than I could give him. I hope everything works out for you.
