Ok, who uses them and HOW do you use them??? I know NOTHING about them. All I can think is that they must leak like CRAZY, but I have to be wrong because SOOOOO many people use them. I just have to know cuz if it is cheaper and easier than the damn disposable ones, then I am soooo switching!

we used them with my godson and they were definately cheaper but did require a bit more effort You have to rinse them and when you go places you need to make sure you have something to put the soiled ones in. But they are better for our enviroment.

I use them occasionally. I wish I was able to do it ALLL the time, but I'll admit I give in to convenience more often then not. I think it's a greater cost initially, but worth it in the long run. I tend to use them after she's pooped for the day...

There's also flushable diapers out now: http://www.gdiapers.com/

I'm considering cloth because it's cheaper and kids tend to end up potty trained faster after being in them.

we are doing a combo of disposable and cloth. cloth for at home and short trips and longer trips and the like with disposable. i agree i love going to diaperpin.com. also you can search for cloth diaperers in your area through google or cloth diaper vendors and maybe meet up with someone and actually physically see and touch the diapers. i'm doing that today while cosby is gone, with a woman that lives here on base.

Thats a good idea! I should do something like that.

yeah Toby had brought it up while I was PG that he wanted to use them, but his reason was "because babies dont poop that much anyway." :inshock are you kidding me?? Yeah he is CRAZY!

I am now using AIO diapers at home and disposables when we go somewhere. I wish I had done this a LOOOONG time ago.

It saves so much money, too bad I waited until the 4th kid to try it!!

I got my AIO diapers off Ebay, and some where only $3 :clap

See HH works for me even their hemp doubler which other people have had issues with. I DO NOT like fuzzi bunz that much though the snaps seem like they are going to rip right out of the cloth. :neutral My favorite are the bottom bumpers AI2's.

I use prefolds pinned on with a snappi when we are at home sometimes with a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap on sometimes (most times) not. I have not had an issue with leaking yet, in fact I had more problems with the disposables on him. :censored EVERYTIME that child pooped it went out the back of his diaper AND out the inside of his legs EVERYTIME. Since we switched to cloth no more poop explosions.

I do the dunk and swish for poo diapers BUT when yo have a newborn you can just toss the poo diaper right in the wash with the rest of your diapers , for older kid poo I just shake/scrape it into the toilet do a little dunking and then toss it in my wet bag I have hanging in the bathroom. I have a pair of rubber gloves I store under the sink for when I do this and I just wash them with antibacterial soap after I dunk and swish. We have had no staining.

I started with the G diapers and still have tons of inserts and I have four med covers and a bunch of the snap in liner holders. :reallymad I used the inserts for about a month and then started stuffing the G diaper with a fold prefold. The G diaper insert squishes up in the cover and it makes for a bad poo situation. So they did not work for us.

I do not use disposables at all unless he has to go to the CDC for some reason. I have a wet bag for when we are out and about. I also tend to use the all in ones when we run errands or go on outings. It is no worse then using disposables really. I love it (L) and fluffy tushies look so darn cute! :lol

I also like that cloth diapers have very good resale value.

OK a wet bag is a bag that is made of PUL (which is a type of coating they put on the material to make it waterproof polyurethane something or other.) you put wet/dirty diapers in them and they are washable. They make small, medium, & large sizes so you can even line a diaper pail with some of them or you can hang them from a door.

G diapers are an Aussie invention they are a cloth cover that has a snap in liner (just something to hold the insert in place) then you put a biodegradable insert in there. The insert can be flushed so the waste goes to a water treatment facility (YAY) instead of the landfill were it is leaking into the ground & ground water (YUCK). Some people love them I thought they were ok and have a crap load of insert packages left and several covers and snap in liners that I am going to list at some diaper FSOT boards I go to.

A prefold is like the Gerber "burp" cloths that people buy ONLY they aren't burp clothes they are cloth diapers people just like to buy the Gerber ones and use them as burp cloths.

Most people that cloth diaper don't use the Gerber ones though because they are not very absorbent, only come in infant size (the bigger sizes Gerber makes are hard to find) and have synthetic filler instead of all cotton.

I LOVE Fuzzi Bunz. We CD PT....we CD at home after Danny has pooped for the day and we use disposables when we are out and about for the most part.

I LOVE CDing....call me a junkie, but it is addicting!!

You can always get one of these sprayer things that attaches to the toilet to hose off the diapers, less dunk & swirl.

heres a copy of my basic cloth info I sent to a friend from work....

These sites give you a good description of the types of diapers....

Pockets~
http://fuzzibunz.com/Fuzzi-Bunz-Details.htm (http://fuzzibunz.com/Fuzzi-Bunz-Details.htm)
http://swaddlebees.com/ (http://swaddlebees.com/)

also go to www.Diaperpin.com (http://www.diaperpin.com/) they have excellent reviews and the forums are a wealth of information as well as mommys selling diapers
most moms take paypal or a money order. Also try www.diaperswappers.com (http://www.diaperswappers.com/) all types of diapers for sale.

just a few things....
Pocket diapers are the ones I showed you with the pocket in the back that you stuff the pads in and I showed you I was using 2. these are great because you can make the diaper as absorbant as you want which is great for over night and shopping trips.

All In ones are a complete diaper....the padding is sewn into the diaper and all you do is snap or velcro it on, no stuffing involved. The most like a disposable diaper in my opinion. Downside is that you cant make it more absorbant unless you lay a liner in between the baby and the diaper. I do really like these though. Also known as an AIO

Fitted diapers..., no plastic lining inside the diaper and it needs a cover. I am just starting to use these and they are not bad but more complicated than using pockets or AIO's.

CPF's (Chinease prefolds), Indian Prefolds, Flats...the old flat white diapers that need pins or a thing called a snappi.http://www.earthbaby.com/snappis.html (http://www.earthbaby.com/snappis.html) Easy to use but not as convient or easy as the above diapers. These also need a cover. But are the cheapest option for cloth diapering.

Covers.. www.greenmountaindiapers.com (http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/) can be anything from vinyl, wool, or fleece. I have fleece and vinyl and they work very well. Can be reused because the fitted diaper or CPF catches and holds all the pee and hopefully keeps the poop in. Only need to be washed every few days or when poopy escapes and gets on the cover. I love wool covers and wool covers require special washing and lanolising or they will leak but some are darn cute! http://www.sitonknits.com/store/WsAncillary.asp?ID=1 (http://www.sitonknits.com/store/WsAncillary.asp?ID=1)

note that the sites I linked for diapers are just a few of hundreds! the diaper pin site lists and has links to a ton of diaper sites. If you register on the diaper pin forums my name on there is Scarlet. If you have any questions feel free to call or e-mail! Also, let me know if you decide to use cloth. Its so much fun and buying cute diapers is addictive.

other links~ www.cottonbabies.com (http://www.cottonbabies.com/) home of bumgenious! diapers, their one sz diapers are great and fit my 3 month old and the same diaper will fit my potty training 2.5yr old
www.kissaluvs.com (http://www.kissaluvs.com/) they have great cloth wipes, work much much better than disposable
http://www.llamajama.com/ (http://www.llamajama.com/) great wool covers and shorts, also long pants....all diaper covers......i buy mine used though....

I made my own pocket and AIO's when we used cloth. I really like the Very Baby pattern. I liked being able to pick my own fabric and send it in to have the PUL applied. The only brands I have purchased are Jelly belly, it was nice, but not made for babies with larger thighs. I also purchased a Happy Heiny's, she is local, east county, and well I wasn't impressed. The fit was great but, the fabric didn't last and the fleece inner seemed thin. I was disappointed, but I only bought the one diaper.

Here is a very useful book The ‘Do it Yourself’ Cloth Diapering Handbook (http://www.diapersandwipers.com/handbook.htm)

Every CD mama has a favorite so I recommend getting a few of each kind of diaper and developing a diaper system that works for your family & budget.

The Diaper Pin, Diaper Traders, Diaper Swappers, are good places to go for ideas, help, Q&A's, FSOT items, and WAHM's.

These sites have a lot of info too:
http://www.comfybummy.com/
http://www.diapersafari.com/diaperinfo/diaperchecklist/
http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/index.htm
http://www.diaperjungle.com/
http://www.cottonbabies.com/index.php

Here is a WAHM mall:
http://hyenacart.com/index.ph (http://hyenacart.com/index.php)

I have bought from these shops great CS.
http://www.justduckybaby.com/
http://www.simplewondersdiapers.com/
http://www.zoombabygear.com/index.html
http://www.cottontailbaby.com/index.php

I have not bought from them myself BUT I have bought their AI2's from another Mama (FSOT) & they are my favorite diaper.
http://www.bottombumpers.com/

I myself can not afford to use only pocket diapers or all in ones/twos so I use a mix of everything. I use my prefolds at home, or when I go to my parents house, I use my AIO/2's when we are running errands or having an outing, I use those and the pocket diapers for night time diapering. When we are at home he is just in a prefold or fitted with out the cover on most of the time.

I don't like fuzzi bunz they don't leak but the snaps feel as if they will tear out of the PUL if I pull to hard. I know other people have had their snaps pulled out on accident. I am trying to buy from mostly WAHM now that I have a nice little start to my diaper stash.

Prepping New Diapers

Prepping Hemp:
-Prep hemp alone so oils do not get transferred.
-Do several (3-5) HOT washes with detergent and dry on HOT in between washes to remove oils.
-Can boil hemp for 20-30 min before machine washing to reduce the number of wash/dry cycles needed. Do NOT boil anything with elastic or snaps!

Prefolds:
- Do 5-9 HOT washes with detergent and dry on HOT in between washes to remove oils.
-Can boil for 30 min first and do less washes. Do NOT boil anything with elastic or snaps!
-Do not wash with fleece.
-Some mamas use detergent with every wash, others use it only the first couple washes.

Non-Hemp fitteds/pockets/aios:
-Only wash/dry once as you usually would, no additional prepping needed.
-For PUL, dry on hot to seal PUL.

To check if diapes are prepped enough:
-Sprinkle a few drops of water on them. If the water immediately soaks up they should be ready. If the water beads up on the surface or repels then you need more washes

Wool Wash & Care

Wool only has to be washed once every 2 or 3 weeks unless of course it gets soiled. Wool has a self cleaning property in it called lanolin. If your wool feels damp or wet after wearing it, simply lay it out flat to air out and let the wool do its job of self cleaning. When the lanolin properties get too low, its time to lanolize them. Lanolizing only needs to be done every 2 or 3 months depending on how often its washed. The instructions below will help you care for your wool, for washing only, omit the lanolin step.

Here are the steps to caring for your wool:

1. Run your hot water until its good and HOT in the bathroom sink, allowing it to drain, once its hot turn it off for a few seconds to do step 2.

2. Put the plug in your bathroom sink and put your lanolin in the bottom of the sink, I use about a 1/2-1 inch glob of the lanolin.

3. Run a little hot water in the sink and add baby shampoo or baby wash to the water (wool wash may be used too). Only run enough hot water in the sink to break up the lanolin.

4. Run room temp water to fill the rest of the sink up.

5. Turn your wool wrong side out and submerge into the mixture in the sink and let soak 30 minutes (longer if you feel it needs more lanolizing).

6. After you're done soaking, lay a towel folded in half for you to lay your wool on; take the wool out of the water and gently squeeze the excess water out, do not ring.

7. Lay your wool on the towel and roll the towel up with the wool inside, gently squeeze as your rolling.

8. Lay flat to dry, I like laying them on one of those sweater racks. They take 24 hours sometimes to dry.
