How common or rare are they?

They're pretty common, though most women dont realise they're having one - they just experience an unusually heavy period. I think about 10-15 of pregnancies result in miscarriage, but dont quote me on that.

This is very very true

Many early pregnancy miscarraiges are commonly referred to as a chemical pregnancy. The woman is pregnant but the egg does not attatch itself to the uterine lining and is flushed with her period. She may be a day or 2 late and never know. Thos who are actively trying for a baby and charting are the ones who are usually aware that they had such a thing since they know when ovulation occured, they tracked everything, plotted everything and normally start using home pregnancy tests earlier then a missed period.

The miscarriage rate is between 10-15% in early pregnancy. This nnumber dwindles to around 3-5% after the heartbeat is heard.

They are pretty common. I've had one that I was far enough alone to know about myself.

Yeah, my doctor has told me that lots of women have had them, but just don't realize it. Like Zelda said, a heavy period that's a couple of days late or just really bad cramps along with a period are sometimes miscarriages and like Caimbrie said, only if you're actively charting your periods and ovulation dates do you realize that you've miscarried. I know I've had a period that was late and was heavier and more painful than most so I assumed that I may have miscarried. Clotting can also be more noticeable.

M/C tend to be pretty common with first pregnancies.

I believe I was between 8 and 10 weeks when I had my miscarriage.

My friend's OB told her about half of all pregnancies end up in miscarriage. However, alot of them occur so early the woman doesn't even know she was pg.

This is what my hubby and I think happened to me when we were ttc in 2004. I was 4 days late with AF and my cycles are normally like clockwork. I kept taking pg tests and they kept coming back negative. I know from a class I took in college that once the egg is fertilized it has so much time, I believe it is around 10 days (don't quote me on that it has been a few years since I've had that class), to attach itself to the uterus and if it doesn't then it passes like AF.

Very, very common, unfortunately. I think the miscarriage rate is something like 70% for ALL pregnancies. granted, that includes the ones that are so early that the woman usually does not know she is even pregnant. You may be a day or two late, or sometimes not even late at all. People who are actually trying to conceive usually know about them because they are more likely to test early. Even if you miscarry, if you have the slightest bit of pregnancy hormone, you will usually get a positive.

Like Kristi said, I think the rate of miscarriage after you get a positive test (or blood work) is around 15%. Then it drops down a lot further to about 3-4% after you see the heart beat.

I've been through several myself, the latest one being at around 14-15 weeks and requiring a D&C. They can be extremely devestating.

Thanks girls...We're not trying per say, buy the BC is gone and we do what it takes to make a baby. I had just been hearing about them a good bit lately, and was wondering what I was up against if we do end up getting pregnant. It's kinda scary to know how common they are!
