My husband has been there before and would never want to accept orders there. I don't blame him. You can't do much on a 12miX8mi(est.) island...

I also wanted to add that everyone I have talked to says that they loved Guam and would go back in a heartbeat. A few people at dh's command have been and are going back.

DH was there from 95-97.. he said it wasn't bad, but it got boring after the first year. He did say it's very beautiful and he'd go back there if the Navy suddenly stopped letting us choose our orders...

1. Does anyone know what the rent is like off base??
Our rent for a 2br/2b apartment was $1700 but it was completely covered by our BAH. Plus you get COLA

2. Is the cost of living very high?
It was okay. Higher than other places since it is a tiny island but as I said in the other reply, you get COLA

3. Did you enjoy living in Guam?
We loved it there. Lots to do as far as outdoor things go (hiking, diving, swimming etc), despite everyone saying that there are many snakes I didn't see a single one and DH only saw 1 in the two years he was there, lol

4. If you had it to do over would you do go there again??
YES!!!

Same here. Only 2 people that I talked to who aren't outdoorsy hated it.

Guam is shaped like a footprint and is 30 miles long, stretching from Ritidian Point in the north to the village of Merizo in the south. The widest point, between Orote Point and Ylig Point, is about 12 miles across; the island's narrowest point is about four miles.

I havn't been there- but I totally would. It's so close to home! Yet far enough so my family can't visit every weekend :)

I would love to go too. If he really decides to go active and gets to go to Guam I will be so excited. Of course we will have to get married so I can go too...lol

I love, loved, loved Guam! And would absolutely jump at the chance to go back. IDK what it costs to rent in town, as we lived in the best base housing I have had in the Navy. COLA makes the higher cost of living pretty negligible, especially if you use the commisary, NEX and gas station on base. HTH

Well...I have been here a month....and LOVE IT! yeah, there are some things that are eh....but thats anywhere you go! It seriously is what you make it here! We almost rented off base, it really depends what you are looking for. We found an amazzzzing condo, with views of the ocean AND sea! We would have ended up paying 200 a month out of pocket, but we didnt care! But they ended up renting the place before we got it :( But its okay, we LOVE our on base house. The outside looks...the same as every other concrete bunker on base lol...but i love the inside, perfect for us!
There is a ton to do if you like to explore! So many opportunities here if you look for them!
The people so far are great! Lots of Japanese taking your picture...weird...but funny!
but yeah,I love it here, and hopefully will for the next 4 years!
