View Full Version : how do you dicipline your dogs?
SezzySue 06-29-2007, 12:24 PM How do you punish the dogs for doing bad thinga. positive reinforcement does not work one bit.
A small s[anking doesn't even phase rory. she was mad at me for putting her in the cage overnight and even though i just let her out she went upstairs to pee on the floor.
harrisonsdream 06-29-2007, 12:26 PM cosby's main no no he does is snarling at us when we try and remove him from the situation. he gets spanked and "pinned" until he can calm down
rosebud* 06-29-2007, 12:29 PM Kenzy will get "pinned" if she is acting too agressive and needs to chill out. As for the peeing thing How big is rory and how long does she stay outside? I had a puppy that would do the same thing so i wound up having to take her out on the leash till she peed.. Sucked for me, but kept me from cleaning up pee inside.
SezzySue 06-29-2007, 12:36 PM Rory is ALREADY 2. She will go out for 20 minutes or so. but most times she lays at the door wanting back in. she doesn't normally do this but i had to remove the doggie door because the kitty goes out. i just want her to learn.

Best thing to do is start from scratch. Pretend like she is a new puppy. it might be that she doesn't like being outside by herself. Possible upset that she now how to wait for you to let her out when she had free reign before.
USCGBoxerMom 06-29-2007, 01:12 PM The Boxers are easy to discipline, they get their feelings hurt very easily so when we fuss at them they run right to their cages and slink out about 1/2 hour later to check and see if we are still mad.
For the peeing take her out on a leash, let her pee, praise her like crazy and bring her right back in. Don't let her play because she will get the idea that outside is play time...it's only play time after she's done her "business" and make sure she knows that.

Yeah what she said.. don't have too many complete thoughts lately.. not enough sleep and not enough coffee :D
sgmwife1 06-29-2007, 01:18 PM A very stern voice command.
SezzySue 06-29-2007, 03:04 PM i will try the leash thing. She is used to being able to come and go as she pleases. She won't poop on a leash but we can start with peeing. I usually let both dogs out together and she will do better if Eb is with her and she isn't alone.
Lilithdrff 06-29-2007, 03:16 PM Max gets commands for everything, if he breaks a house rule he gets a command which means he was bad, and he is put on a timeout and ignored. I don't believe in hitting dogs, I think it makes them aggressive. I don't pin dogs either (DH does). He follows my commands without a fuss, depending on my body language and strength of voice, he knows I mean business and I'm the boss.
We also do lots and lots of positive re-enforcement. Treat when he's good, lots of praise, etc.
Crystal520 06-29-2007, 07:25 PM Stern voice command and a flick on the nose.....also when Lily 1st started to get nippy, I would bite her ear if she bit me (not hard) but hard enough to know what it feels like.....she stopped after a few times.
SezzySue 06-30-2007, 03:58 AM neither of my dogs have EVER been aggressive. If i give a stern voice BOTH dogs cower and run away from me. Then as soon as I am not looking the start running around playing 2 seconds later. at least if rory gets a little tush smack she realizes she did something wrong. and then the other dog doesn't think she is in trouble.
Lilithdrff 06-30-2007, 11:41 AM My dog doesn't cower and run off, he sits and then does whatever he was commanded to do. Only time he takes off is when I'm trying to pry something out of his mouth that shouldn't be there >_< We're still working on the "drop" command, he's only 11 weeks old though, so not surprising that he thinks I'm playing when I want to get something from him.
blue_as_eeyore 06-30-2007, 12:12 PM use a spary bottle with a mixture of water and vinegar (sp?). We use it on doc and if hes being really naughty we up the vinegar(sp?) content and he obeys....
chelsea<3josh 06-30-2007, 12:24 PM literally nothing phases my dog. he is generally well behaved as far as he is never ever aggressive and he has not gone to the bathroom in the house since he was a puppy (he is 4 now) BUT he has the BIGGEST mouth and barks at thin air. it drives me absolutely crazy. what really gets him going is the lawn mower and the vacuum cleaner. so i will usually put him on his leash IN the house and then he acts like he can't move for some reason if the leash is attached to him. so then i just leave him be with the leash on him and he lays down. it makes me laugh, because he loves his leash for walks but in the house it is punishment. hey whatever works though...he's kinda dumb :lol
USCGBoxerMom 06-30-2007, 06:11 PM The Boxers are command trained as well...and they do what they are told, but they HATE to be fussed at. Boxers in general are very emotional dogs and tend to get their feelings hurt easily so when they do they hide in their cages until they are no longer "upset" and then they come out.
Jennygirl 06-30-2007, 06:20 PM Ours get spanked and then they go to jail.
VinnysGirl 06-30-2007, 06:53 PM Sophie will either get a stern voice command or get spanked depending on the severity of the offense. If she pees we ask her sternly.. did you pee on the floor and of course she INSTANTLY knows she's in trouble and gets a swat on the behind and then is made to lay on her pillow until we let her off. She knows that when we say... "PILLOW" with a stern voice that we mean business and she does not fight us.
If she takes something she's not supposed to have we make her sit and take it away from her and hold her nose and tell her NO while she looks at us straight in the face. We've never had to pin her or anything like that and she's sort of like the boxers mentioned in that she HATES to have her feelings hurt and that's what happens when she gets yelled at!!!!!
Miss B Hav'n 06-30-2007, 08:58 PM Tink came to us from the shelter - she had been abandoned there after hours and was in horrible condition. It's pretty clear she had not had a pleasant life and it left her very fragile/timid. Nothing more than a mild verbal correction is ever necessary - and we have to be very careful with those as she is overly sensitive.
SezzySue 06-30-2007, 11:57 PM they understand basic commands but once she already did something I don't know how to get it through to her that she did bad.
Ashnbri 07-02-2007, 01:45 PM I usually grab alex's collar so he will look at me and shake my finger at him and tell him no bad dog..and point at whatever he did and tell him to go lay down and that seems to work for him.
Potatocup 07-02-2007, 01:54 PM It depends on what he's done bad. Most of the time we send him to his crate ("go to bed"). that's his timeout spot. if he is being wild around children and we can't get his attention, for example, we will pin him and tell him to settle. we just push him down, then let go. he gets the idea.
for the peeing thing, sam wouldn't go outside - we left him for 4 hours one time, determined to make him go by himself outside. It didn't work. We have to walk him. The doggie door allows him to go - without it, we'd be in the same situation as you.
dotb182 07-02-2007, 02:00 PM For lucy it depends on what she is doing, normally I can just grab her collar and yell at her for a second ( " NO! Bad dog etc" ) and she'll cut it out if that doesn't work and she continues to do whatever she is doing she normally gets a small ( not hard) pop on the butt, just to get her attention and I tell her to knock it off. Other then that she goes outside when she is being bad so she can run of the energy outside. Oh she does get a small pop to the mouth if she's playing to rough and biting or if she is excessivly barking and won't stop. But its nothing hard or that could hurt her, its just enough to get her attention.
