I don't know what the problem is. Scooter used to be the sweetest, most loving, friendliest dog ever.
Back about a year ago, one of my nieces got in his face and yanked him up by his ears, and ever since then he's been skiddish around kids.
Then, when DH left for basic back in October, he got really protective of me around men.
Recently (as in the last 2 weeks) he's been acting like he's going to bite anyone new that comes around. He even tried to bite my granny the other day, probably because she had her motorcycle helmet on and he didn't recognize her.
When company comes over, I put him in another room as soon as I see a car pull up, but he sits back there barking and growling like crazy.
I just don't know what to do to make him better. He gets worse and worse everytime DH leaves.
Does anyone have in advice on what to do with him? He's absolutely wonderful dog around the people he's familiar with, but I just can't deal with this and I want my "regular" dog back!

I think pets experience the same stresses that we do, but they can't rationalize them. So, in response, they get protective. Have you ever taken him to doggie school? Aside from learning a bunch of fun tricks, it's a great way to help socialize your dog and also address issues such at these.

Also, sometimes a pet will get protective or agressive if he has a hidden ailment...or he senses that YOU have a hidden ailment. You may even want to get a check up at the vet.

I want to take him to school, but when I have the time, I don't have the money and vice versa. As for him being sick, I've taken him to the vet 3 times since October for check ups because I'm so worried about him. I want to take him and socialize him, but I'm afraid he'll bite. I'm hoping that once we get settled in Germany, and are living in one place with a set routine, that will happen, because things have been crazy since October.
