View Full Version : Question about giving baby 1st foods
Lilithdrff 03-01-2006, 01:28 PM Ok, I'm having a moment, and I really can't remember if it's ok to start giving Cadence little tastes of baby food already. She's 4 months old, and strictly on breastmilk. When I took her to the doctor last time she said it was ok to give her some cereal and stuff, but doctors with Kat told me to wait until she was at least 6 months.
Anyway, any mommies give their 4 month olds little tastes every now and then?
IgglesmumX2 03-01-2006, 01:29 PM Okay, officially the recommendation is 4-6 (pushing towards 6 months) but I think you should follow your baby's cues. If she is fine purely BF then continue to just BF. Bradley was on cereal at 2 months (for reflux) and baby food at 3 1/2
mamaoftwins+1 03-01-2006, 01:30 PM yep teegan loves baby food i started it at 4 months. what i did was gave him some in the morning to make sure his belly could handle it instead of trying it at night before bed he did good
BLBnJVB3 03-01-2006, 01:34 PM Johnny just turned 5 months on Monday and we have been giving him jar food since a little before he was 3 months. Breanna, we waited til a little after she turned 3 months. I have told the drs. when we started them and none of their drs. have said anything. The dr. Johnny has now said giviong him veggies will actaully help with his spitting up. He spits up all the time. It isn't just a little either. It has gotten better but there for awhile I was changing both us 3 times a day cause he would completely soak us both.
I do recommend if you are going to start giving baby food that you start with veggies. They get a taste of the sweet in the fruits and they won't want anything else. Also whatever you decide to give first, wait at least 3 days before adding another food. If they are allergic to something it is hard to tell which when they have eaten several foods. Good Luck.
Lilithdrff 03-01-2006, 01:35 PM She does great with breastmilk, so she technically doesn't seem to need solid food. I do want to give her some baby food, trying to make her not be such a bad eater as her sister, lol. We didn't try baby cereal, because Kat hated it, so we figured Cadence wouldnt like it either. Ahh, decisions, decisions :(

Sorry but I have to disagree with this one. DD started with fruits and has always prefered veggies.
We started George on cereal around 2 1/2 months. His quack reccomended it due to his excessive weight gain *he gained 13 lbs in 2 mo* It really slowed his weight gaining down to a normal pace. He started the 1st foods at 3 mo. He eats regular ground up table food now. He will be 8 mo old on Saturday.

I agree. WIC gave me this info on it b/c a friend suggested that I put cereal in his bottle at night to help him sleep through the night. So I talked to doctor yesterday about doing it, and he said wait until at least 4 months, but that six months is better. He said that the baby will want to start eating more often and will affect his weight gain. He also said the decision is ours, but that is what is recommended. But I agree with exnavychick that you should follow the baby's cutes.
mara_jade81 03-02-2006, 04:11 AM with madison the dr. said i could start anytime after 4 months with solids. i waited a few weeks and tried and she liked it at first but then didn't want solids until a little after she turned six months.
hayden is so big already that the dr. told me yesterday that i didn't need to give him any solids yet unless he started to act hungry after he ate. i've heard from several sources that it's better to wait until six months or so. i might start giving hayden bites of cereal here and there to get him used to the idea of eating from a spoon. he's reaching for our food too so i think he's getting interested in other food. i really don't think he needs it though!
Brandi 03-02-2006, 06:38 AM Jaxon was on cereal when he was less than a month old. He started on the jarred food when he was about 3 1/2- 4 months. Was eating all table food by 8 months.
Shelby started on cereal when she was 2 months. She started regular jarred food when she was about 4 months. She is a little over 7 months and is eating stage 3 and mostly table foods that we eat. She seems to be doing fine.
Both kids showed signs of being ready and their peds said I could start whenever I felt they were ready, with no real specific time line. Just go with the flow :D
Lilithdrff 03-04-2006, 01:17 PM Well, I attempted to give her some banana baby food, and the little lady wasn't impressed. Between the ugly faces, and spitting it back out at me, I'm guessing she's not ready yet, lol. I'll wait one more month, then see if she's more open to it.
Thanks for the opinions/refresher course ladies :) My mind seriously took a dump when the solids question came up, lol.
mara_jade81 03-04-2006, 02:00 PM :hehe sounds like what hayden did when i tried to give him some rice cereal. he didn't want anything to do with it but he sure tries to get our food.
