Does anyone own a ferret? I have no plans on getting one, but DH has wanted one for awhile. When we were at Petco today, our son saw the ferret's there and really liked them. However, my MIL tells me that they are not a good pet to have, and they get meaner as they get older...?

I know our 2 dogs (who are cattle dogs) would not like having a ferret in the house, because its their natural nature to chase and nip at things. I have no doubt they'd probably kill it.

But, I just wanted to ask and get people's opinions on them.

My Dh;s best friends do and I grew up around my Aunts. They didn't seem mean to me just got into things. They do stink though.

We had one and my dd and dh are BEGGING to have another. They dont stink that bad..as long as you religiously clean the cage and keep them clean. They are funny little animals..curious and mischevious. We really loved ours....If your dh is serious I would say go for it..

at home in CA ferrets weren't allowed as pets. (some state law thing)

I have 2, they don't stink that bad, they are both descented and fixed. I had one a long time, she didn't get meaner as she got older. Females are a bit nippy though. My male is super sweet.

The only type of dogs they usually aren't good with are dogs that were trained to do ratting or small game, bunnies, weasels etc some dogs are totally fine others go nutts

I had 2 ferrets for awhile. I loved them. My cocker spaniel pretty much ignored them both. They are curious and get into everything. My cabinets in the kitchen had to be tied shut when they were out playing. If you clean their cage and bathe them they dont stink all that bad

I had a ferret for a while. He was awesome...him and my one ct would wrestle all the time. He would also jump all over my old dog (golden retriver) while the dog would just lie there and let him.
