When did you guys start letting your child use a real cup instead of a sippy cup? Was there anything you did to make the transition easier on yourselves? We have tried giving my daughter a regular cup before but there is always a huge mess and we have carpet in our dining room. Any advice would be very helpful. TIA

my oldest will be 10 next week and he still knows that if he wants to take his drink out of the kitchen it has to have a lid. My 2 year old can have a cup in the kitchen without a lid too. I just dont want to clean up the mess. it has nothing to do with if they can or cant drink out of a cup.

My oldest is 3 and he drinks from a regular cup fine and has for probably 6 months or so i guess... I make him use it at the table though.. not because of him but because I have a 1 year old walking around.

It started with them just taking drinks out of my cup at about 10 months. You could try the free flowing lids (like tuperware siperseals) and then go to a regular cup. Also, maybe just water till she gets the hang of it.

Jr started when he was like a year and a couple months. He started going to the Navy child development center and they weren't allowed sippy cups. But, I found that you have to give them really small cups, not the regular size adult cups. When the cups are smaller the can predict how much will come to them rather than going to take a small gulp and it spilling everywhere!

I started with a sippy cup before a regular cup. My son who just turned 1 on monday is already completely off the bottle and using a sippy cup.. it'll be a little while til i try him with a regular cup.

When I worked with the CDC here on base they said that children at 12 months needed to be on a sippy cup, then at 2 a regular cup without a lid. I still put a lid on for in the living room until about 3 though!!

I think dd was about 3 1/3 when we stopped the sippy cup. It might be longer with the boys since they are more absent minded than she was.

Thanks Ladies. Both the kids have been on sippy cups since they were a year old and DD just turned 4 and DS just turned 3 so I figured now would be a good time to get them both on a regular cup.
