It could be. When is his next vet visit?

he won't be going again until the end of this month to get his nails trimmed (long story but he hates us doing it)

It doesn't sound like ear mites to me. But it could be. I'm no expert. I was thinking it could also be some other kind of bite or (hate to think about it) another kind of parasite. But then again it could be nothing at all. :dunno

I would say call the vet to ask, but you know they will just say to bring him in.

ear mites?
That's what I was going to say. It's common in dogs with longer ears. Just take him in and the vet will give you some stuff for his ears if it's the mites. Another idea may be some type of yeast infection in his ears.

Poor guy. Nothing worse than itchy ears.

i still think it's possibly ear mites.. walmart has ear mite medicine, it's a few dollars, it's like powder.. you just squirt some in..you could try that.. it won't hurt him to try..

Do not treat for mites unless you know for sure that is what it is. It could hurt him. Give him some benedryl for the itching, you can give 1mg per pound and if you have the tablets you can cut them in half it you need to. You can't really "OD" the dog on Benedryl unless you give him TONS and TONS.
It's possible he has a little yeast infection, but at least the Benedryl will take the itching away for him until you get him to the vet.

i've got children's grape flavored benadryl that i was told to try when we were finding sedatives for him. it tweaks him out so i'm hesitant to give it to him.
