is it hard or an easy process?

I've never done it, but if you are going to do it I say START the process NOW!

I've heard it can be quite long. That's all I really know about it. Moving to Hawaii can be up to a 180 day quarantine and you have to pay for it all! You can by-pass a lot of it.

Umm...well I moved my schnauzer over here to Germany with us. It was easy for me because I worked for a vet & did all the paper work my self & sent it off to the USDA. I would for sure recommend going a head & get the ball rolling on it because they have to be microchipped, Rabies vacc. with in the past year, and a few other things. The health certificate is only good for 4 months or at lest mine was. Texas might be different than where your at. So check all that out first. Also make sure the air port puts your pet as extra baggage....it's a Boston right? As long as they put it as extra baggage the Army pays for it. They did for ours. We had to pay $127.00 for Stormee to fly over here & she weighed at the time (she was & is still a puppy) 15 to 17 pounds. Good luck!!! i'll be glad to help in any way I can! Where at in Germany?

Depends on where your going. When we moved to Greece it was easy. We just had to make sure our 3 cats had their shots and health certificates. We had to leave our cat behind when we moved to Japan because there wasnt enough time to get everything done plus way too expensive.

We are in Japan. To get here the Health Certificate had to be issued within 10 days of the flight. And had they had to be approved by the USDA and all. Really if you have someone local, it doesn't take too long. The rabies shot has to be more then 30 days old, but less then a year. And they have to be microchipped. The quarantine over here is in-house for 14 days, so if you have a place for them, they can be with you. If you are in lodging, then they'll have to be in the kennels. And you are responsible for the fees.

Also, the flight fee is yours to pay. Most airlines are around $80 for a cat...not sure about a larger dog. And that is per airline. Coming over we had to pay $80/ea for the commercial east to west coast...then another $80/ea on the military flight.

We are just about to PCS (Tuesday) and tomorow we are going to get their health certificate and then we'll be set to leave. No problem. Their shots were last fall, so within the time frame.

It can be a lengthy process...going to europe is the easiest of all the places to go...

Japan, Hawaii, and Guam have a 120 day quartine since they are rabies free. You will have to have your animal microchipped and have two active vacs after the implanting of the chip. Then you have to have a FAVN drawn and that runs about 40 dollars per dog. The quaritine starts the day the blood is recieved at the lab.

We at out treatment facility will not help someone who does not give us atleast 6 months...The labs get backed up at certain times of the year.

Your best bet would be to call your local USDA and get the super most current information.

Here is a great site that shows all the spots. Japan (where I am with two cats) is 14-day in house if all is in order coming over.

Interesting, but I follow the Armys and the USDAs rules...Thanks for the site. But since I work for them, thats what we have to do.

Depends on where your going...Hawaii does not necessarily have the 120 day quarantine anymore, if all your ducks are in a row you can have your dog released at the airport. Don't always go by what you "hear" at a base Vet office, just like any other part of the military they are not always up on the "latest and greatest" and they are not the only ones that are schooled in overseas animal shipping, a lot of local Vets in a military town are as well. Talk to the USDA as well as the country you are going to (google it and get a number), alot of times the quarantine process has changed or is shorter if all your stuff is done. Alot of country are now going with the in-home quarantines as well.

But START NOW...if you know your going.

Well thank you, thats why I call the USDA before we do anything for people going overseas. :irked Thats part of my job..

I know your animals can be released at the desination or its five days. But there is an at home quaritine before going which is what Im talking about.

People who dont use the USDA instructions or dont do everything or do them their way are the people that come in crying to us.

Oh and the civi vets in this area will not send the FAVN samples to the two labs that do them so the client has to do them...And most of the vets here do not know how to do the process.

Get your panties out of a wad...there is no reason you should get upset everytime someone gives a response about quarantine that does not agree with yours or gives another opinion that does not agree with your "job". We get it...you work for a military Vet..:whoopdedoo, that does not mean your always right. Good grief. :whatever

And that information is available on most USDA sites..it's not that hard. Any Vet that can read the literature can send the test.

Well how would you feel if someone told you that you were doing your job wrong? Thats how I felt, so you can save your panties in a bunch comment...I do what I am instructed to do by the Army and USDA. So i guess they are wrong, and when we get inspected, Ill tell them that.

Im done with the post now...But when people may give the wrong information and they show up with 20 days to do everything, it wont be because of me.

Good luck on shipping your animals!

Folks really shouldn't get so upset. I AM IN JAPAN and the info I gave follows what folks here actually had to do to get here...and what I had to do to get my two cats here. I was just saying what ACTUALLY happens here.

Depending on who you go to see to get your paperwork done, might depend on what they have you do. I hope that no one has problems getting their pets to where they are going. I would've been so sad if mine had to be in quarantine because something wasn't in order. Luckily it all was.

But, quarantine in Japan is 14 days in-house if you have all your ducks in a row. Not saying you were wrong...just saying that is how it is here.

Hey everyone. I'm going to Japan. I have the most recent copy for Japan regulations. I'm in Virginia. I had my animals microchipped and vaccinated at Fort Story in Va Beach.

The best advice I can give anyone is check, double check and triple check any info ANYONE gives you. The vet makes mistakes too! You have to have triple copies of your rabies vaccinations. The first one my pets received they only gave me one. The second vaccination they gave me three. My next visit, I have to get the other copies for the first vacc.

So, as long as you start the process early and check and recheck and keep asking questions you'll be fine. Please message me anyone who would like me to tell you what I have done.

Thanks! Sherry:D
