would you ever take a bc pill to give you only 4 periods a year?

Mommy2Bailey

Hell Yes and I have. I was on Seasonale for years before I quit taking it to get pregnant.

harrisonsdream
07-27-2007, 12:15 AM
i don't like the idea personally because well frankly if you are having sex regularly the risk of getting pregnant and not knowing until it's too late is too great in my eyes

ETA: it seems unnatural to me

yes i would but now I have an IUD in place and I haven't had a period since I delivered DD and she is about to be 7 months! I love it!

Oh I loved my seasonale. And personally I believe that if you take your pill like you are suppossed to the chances of you becoming pregnant are slight. I know it happens but I feel like those people might have missed a pill here or there and dont wanna admit it......lol

OMG it's Andrea!

i do that currently. i only have 3 a year tho :)

Nope!
I am begging my dr for a pill TO GIVE ME A PERIOD! I definitely don't need one to screw it up! :no

this thread got brought up by the commercial for seasonique which has a dr. on there saying it's not medically necessary for a woman to have periods every month while on the pill. i just would think it'd get gunky and built up in there

Mommy2Bailey
07-27-2007, 12:34 AM
Well I was on it for about 4 years and loved it.. I never felt like i got "gunky" up in there and I can promise My man didnt either

I guess I would-I was on the shot in the past and didn't have a period for a full year! Then the dr's office changed the rules so between every shot you had to wait until you got your period back before they would give you another shot-to make sure it wasn't screwing up or something. So yeah, I guess 4 periods a year would be better then 12 a year!!!:P

not only would i...but i do... (well, when not preggo)

it's called seasonale.

It seemed rather unnatural/crazy to me, but then I started reading up on it. Especially considering that women used to get their periods later, have more kids, and die earlier, we have waaaaay more periods than our ancestors. And, birth control (from my understanding - not a medical professional by a long shot) gets rid of the whole reason your body has a period in the first place, so I'm not convinced we need the "fake" periods.

Anyway, I'm still not 100% either way, but I am currently on the 4. a year plan, and I love it so far just because of how much less of a hassle it is.

I always said - with a period every month, you're facing a week of PMS, a week of period, and a week of recovery, leaving only one good week per month. This way stretches that "good" phase out, IMO. :dunno

Seasonale is the best isnt it. I loved it the whole time I took it.

No. I would be scared that I wouldn't know if I were pregnant or not.

Mommy2Bailey
07-27-2007, 01:09 AM
If you take BC correctly the chances of a person actually getting pregnant while on it is low. Now I know it happens but i dont personally believe it happens as often when it is taken correctly.

07-27-2007, 01:15 AM
I wouldn't. Something about that seems un-natural to me. I'd prefer to not use any birth control at all and do natrual family planning, but I'm quite scared I'll mess up my charting and end up knocked up again! :giggle

I wouldn't. It doesn't seem like it would be very healthy in the long run.

Nope. i have PCOS and I would love to have regular periods, not skip them(unless preggers!)

Nicole1788

I thought about it, just because i get deathly sick before i get my period, and getting sick 4 times sounds a lot better than 12, ive also been thinking about getting an IUD

I take seasonal and I love it. I wouldn't go back to "regular" b/c pills if you paid me. I love not having to worry about a period every month and I guess my eggs will last longer too since they aren't being released as often as they normally would. I have no complaints on Seasonale, it's been wonderful for me!

Jennygirl
07-27-2007, 11:12 AM
If you just take the regular pill it doesnt release all of the "gunk" inside...Thats why sometimes your periods are heavier some months.

I want to take either of those two but with my conditions I dont think I can.

nope, I don't think is a good idea to stop the natural cycle.

yes! i have terrible periods and i'd love to only deal with them four times a year.

No, I don't even take regular BC. I don't like the idea of playing with my hormones like that really.

that's me too now. i was on the pill for years and it probably saved my butt from getting pregnant as a teenager. i've done a ton of research on the various pills and the only way i'd go on the pill is if my period was horribly heavy and lasted for more than a week. i'm very regular without the pill and i would rather let nature work on it's own

Man I would be all for not having a period ever again! We are done with having kids though, so that would also make a difference in my decision.

I am on seasonal too and Love it!

07-27-2007, 05:35 PM
Heck yes...I would be doing it right now if I didn't always gain weight when I get on BC, plus I don't want any of the other side effects. I already have to deal with a tremendous amound of side effects from my anti-seizure meds.

But yes, I would if I could.

I wouldn't. I like having my period every month, I feel as if it's a natural occurence. I like to keep things as natural as possible in my body. I already take BC which isn't the best thing for me, I definetly don't want to make my cycle even more unnatural by only getting my period 4 times a year

I wouldn't in the first place, because I am Catholic, and believe in NFP, but also because I don't think that taking birth control is natural or good for your body. I used to take it when I was younger and I hated the way that my body came to depend upon it. I would have terrible mood swings when I would try to get off of it, and my periods actually became worse- although they were shorter. I don't like the idea of putting hormones into my body that wouldn't naturally be there.

Kris
07-27-2007, 07:33 PM
nope but mainly becuase my period is already messed up and I don't think it needs any chemical help to continue messing up.

MichelleB
07-27-2007, 07:35 PM
No. I've had my share of BC pills over the years. They don't help my issues one bit.

There's something about having 4 periods a year that seems really unnatural to me. You're meant to have it every month for a reason. Plus, my hormones are screwed up enough, I don't need something like that to mess them up worse.

Jennie
07-27-2007, 07:41 PM
I'm not sure. My period sucks, but I'm not sure I like the idea of not getting them every month. I'm weird tho, I miss having it since I got preggo. :screwy

I would take it if I could. I have heavy periods and it would just help me function better only having it interfere with my daily life 4 weeks a year.Im not having sex anytime soon either so I wouldnt worry about being preggo and not knowing it.

I haven't read through the whole thread, so forgive me if someone already said this, but:

The period you have while on ANY hormonal birth control is not a real period anyway. It's withdrawal bleeding, from the lack of hormones in the "sugar pills" at the end of the pack. Or from it being too long since your shot, removing of NuvaRing, etc.

So, really, having one every month while on BC is the unnatural thing...

(just to clarify, I don't take bc like that, I'm on NuvaRing, but my sister is a OBGYN and gave me the pros and cons after ds was born :D)

I am actually considering doing it right now. While it is easier to not worry about taking a pill everyday and having the non-preggo reassurance every month, at least when DB is actually HERE :rolleyes, is great my cramps kill me. I went on BC for them in the first place because I was regularlly missing three days of school because of cramps! My only concern really (and maybe you ladies who are or have been on it can answer this) is weight gain.

07-27-2007, 09:49 PM
no i haven't, but i have skipped sugar pills and when i saw the doc about it he said that in the quarterly bc pills you can still get residual bleeding. it seems to me like your body should clean out more often than 4 times a year.

Nope, even though I am not a HUGE fan of having my period it would just be too weird and uncomfortable not to get it

yup, my cycle is so irregular if i'm NOT on the pill that i'd probably only have 5 or 6 a year anyway.

My dr just switched me from seasonale to seasonique... supposedly with seasonique there is not as much spotting... We'll see since I just started it a month ago. I prefer this because my cramps are too bad to deal with. I tried the depo for 5 years but gained like 45lbs and couldnt loose it no matter what!

The thought of only having a period 4 times a year is great. But it just seems so wrong! I would be worried about longterm effects.

StephanieM
07-28-2007, 12:12 AM
My periods only last two days to begin with, so I don't really see a need to change, that and my insurance won't cover birth controls such as Seasonale and Seasonique, because it will only cover 1 month of medication at a time; not three.

I'm also on birth control to regulate my periods. I have cystic fibroids and had very painful cramping and multiple periods in a month. Yasmin seems to be the only thing that got it under control and got my period on a normal schedule.
