Did anyone watch this tonight? My sister and I found it really interesting.

Dateline bought a bunch of new iPods and had a software company install a dummy CD which registered it with not only Apple, but also with Dateline when the person went to register it. Dateline used that information to track down the stolen iPods, and they were able to track 12 of the 20 iPods. Sadly, some of the people who had stolen iPods, had no idea they were stolen as they received it as a gift.

iPods were left around in plastic bags to make it look as if someone accidentally left it there, or left it in a car. They did this in Berkley, Santa Monica, New Jersey, and at Pier 39 in San Fransisco.

Basically Dateline did this to see if lost or stolen iPods can be tracked and found. They also covered how Apple won't do anything if an iPod is lost or stolen, and Dateline has proved it can be done and it's very simple.

I saw that! Apple needs to step up and do something IMO. I couldn't believe how many people could just walk away with something like that that wasn't theirs and then be able to enjoy it. I would never do that, and if I did I would feel so guilty I'd never be able to enjoy using it.

For real!

I can't remember what that one girl said about how people do it and it happened to her. I think it was something about a cruel world. At least she gave it back. Then there the guy who stole it and then had it stolen from him. I think his parents offered to pay for it. I think that's the right one.

I didn't see it, but I always wondered how this happens. I mean, I hold on to my stuff, I don't set it down next to me, especially on the Metro or buses and stuff...

p.s. I (L) Dateline.

I would be upset too. I thought I lost my iPod because I couldn't find it anywhere in my house and it wasn't in my backpack. Turns out, it was under the seat of my car which is ODD because I didn't remember putting it there.

I was really disappointed at how quickly and eagerly so many people were willing to steal like they did. It didn't surprise me but it did disappoint me. Sad.

Someone fill me in, I didn't see the episode.

Were these iPods just sitting there unattended in some random spot? I'm lost :lol

Yep.

Some were in dashboard of a car that was a convertible and had the windows down. Some were on top of a car. Some where on benches in the mall and Pier 39. Some were on tables in the mall.

Mind you, most were in a plastic bag and were in the original box. They made it look as if someone just bought it and accidentally left it behind.

Whatever happened to turning that sort of thing into the mall office or even police department (for those not found in the mall)???? Sure, the person in the mall office may well just turn around and take it home with them but at least you have done the right thing, right?
