View Full Version : Will I run out of time to TTC?
terpsichore 08-02-2007, 05:17 AM When, if ever, did you start worrying that you might run out of time to TTC?
Not in the sense of running out of time during a R&R or before a deployment... instead, I mean when, if ever, did you start worrying that you might be getting "too old" and risking an age-related infertility problem?
My clock's ticking already! :lol
Hospitals here regard pregnant women over 30 as 'geriatric' cases :shock I feel like there's a big red line that I'm getting closer and closer to and when I cross it there's no going back. I know that's not the case - plenty of women get pregnant further on in life - but it's scary nonetheless.
terpsichore 08-02-2007, 05:29 AM Sonia, if you don't mind me asking, how old are you?
I'm 26 and it's already on my mind... mainly because I won't finish grad school for another few years.
Nicci 08-02-2007, 05:36 AM I'm 33 and we just started trying. My sister just had her first at 39...it took her a while because she has some other problems that make it difficult to sustain a pregnancy like a septum in her uterus, but she was still able to get pregnant. Women stay fertile FAR longer these days (although my great grandma was insanely fertile, had my grandma at 42 and went on to have 2 more, 11 total).
However that said, chances for birth defects to increase the older you get...but it's still a small percentage. Basically it's when you feel you are ready. I didn't feel ready until last year and circumstances made us wait to start until a few months ago.
I've just turned 27. I'm in the same boat - I'm transferring my course to another uni atm, which might add a yr or two, and I'm worried about being able to finish that and being able to start a family at the same time. I guess and want to have my cake and eat it too!
Kaymara 08-02-2007, 08:07 AM I worried. But I had differnt reasons. I had been TTC for almost a decade before getting pregnant with my son. During my TTC journey I did stress as I watched the years go by. MANY women are having children later tho and are just fine. I was 29 when I had my first and was 31 when I had my 2nd.
usnkarebear 08-02-2007, 12:45 PM Not in this boat at the moment I have hopefully a few years before I have to worry about it but... I wanted to share that Nancy Grace (CNN Anchor woman) is 47 or 48 and pregnant with twins! So I don't think there is truly a time limit just a time that the doctors are more comfortable with!! You can TTC untill you hit menopause LOL :) Good luck to everyone though I will spread some :bbdust around!!!

googlegirl 08-02-2007, 12:54 PM I'm freaking- 32 years old- I've wanted a kid since I was 25- never been married. I'm really worried that I won't be able to conceive naturally- I'll the Clomid? if I need to, but I don't want twins or sextuplets- if I had twins I would love them both so much, though! I can't even TTC until I'm married & have a hubby on board w/ it.

Yeah, but Nancy Grace is probably fairly well off, & can afford a nanny & can have the kids at work with her sometimes. But I'm taking your babydust for later when it's my TTC- thanks!:)
C'swife 08-02-2007, 01:00 PM I'm worried and I am only 21. I think it's normal to worry about that sort of thing! Big hugs I hope it happens for you!!

Clomid is a mild fertility drug. I took that with my son along with metformin and he was just 1 baby the whole time. With clomid your chances of twins is increased to 10% and lower for triplets and so forth. Its when you get into injectibles and IVF that the risk of mulitples is much higher

But did Nancy Grace use an egg donor? (she probably wouldn't tell the press if she did)
Having been an egg donor myself, I really want to do my best to make sure I don't wait so long that I have to resort to those means. It's not that I think there's anything wrong with fertility treatments, donor egg, and donor sperm. The problem is the stress is puts on people and the cost.

Well I can tell ya that you can be young and have those problems too. I started TTC at 19 and had infertility and had to take meds. It wasnt til I was 28 that I was diagnosed and on the right meds to conceive my son. So age really isnt a hUGE factor. You can also be young and have just as many problems
harrisonsdream 08-02-2007, 01:22 PM realize that in addition to some genetic problems the chance of multiples increases as you get older (i believe it starts in your mid-30s). i think you just need to relax and enjoy the sex that you have.
Ellen 08-02-2007, 01:24 PM I'm 37 and we are trying....and hopeful. I did get pregnant, but it was ectopic and had surgery 2 days before my 36th birthday. I hope time isn't running out.....

I understand that some fertility problems exist regardless of age. But, given my experience as an egg donor, I'm assured of my own fertility at this point. That's why I'm worried about the age-related issues/declining egg quality.
theElephant 08-02-2007, 01:27 PM I'm worried, but not because of problems with me really. My husband had a vasectomy years ago, and the longer the time goes by without it being reversed the lower chances of being successful. We're at a critical point to get it reversed and I am worried that it won't be successful and we won't be able to conceive naturally...
terpsichore 08-02-2007, 01:29 PM I should probably clarify that this isn't something that I'm wigging out about. But it's something I think about from time to time.
What do you guys think about something like this: Extend Fertility (http://www.extendfertility.com/). The idea is that you bank your own eggs for use later. It isn't something I'd do anytime soon, but it's an interesting idea.

I probably woulda done it. My eggs were fine, it was lack of ovulation tho. I didnt know it for MANY years tho. So by the time they diagnosed me and what not we were looking into all of our options. Exploring different methods, adoption, my SIL carrying a baby for us etc etc. So it is something I woulda probably explored into.
instant_oatmeal 08-02-2007, 05:59 PM I'm worried and I'm 24.
Alexandra 08-04-2007, 11:31 AM I think about it. I'm 26 but a history of early menopause runs in my family - my mom was only 39 and my grandmother and aunt were both 42. Our plan is to TTC in two years when we are both 28, though I'm not sure I will be ready, I just started a job I love and I would like to work there for more than two years before taking a break. It's so frustrating that the majority of women find themselves in these timing dilemmas and it just doesn't seem to affect men's lives and careers the same way.
