Who else's kids have been in HeadStart for Preschool? We actually qualify for once! WOW! This is the 1st year we have ever qualified for so much! I have an appointment today with the admissions director. They might have one opening at a preschool by here that's part time. I hope it's still open! Aiden really needs to be in preschool and we really can not afford to pay for it ourselves. I used to be an assistant teacher for HeadStart YEARS ago and the program seems decent from what I remember.

My older sister was a foster mother and she had several foster children in Head Start. She told me to never put my kids into it. I don't know first hand about it, I just know my sister was never happy with it.

my mom used to teach headstart and wasn't very fond of the program... she had decided to work there because she "wanted to make a difference" and try to change the quality of the program... but that was in Ithaca, NY in the 70s... so who knows what has changed. :)

good luck :)

wow, I went and looked at the website and it says you must be below the national poverty level to qualify. I can't believe you qualify. :sadeyes

The great lakes preschool in forrestal has decent rates, thankfully. I plan on starting Jaxon in September. He definitely needs to socialization and interaction. I think it will be great for him.

My 2 oldest kids attended head start in San Diego. They went to the center in Linda Vista. I was happy with the teacher and her methods. I would go once a week and volunteer. :dunno Im sure each center is different.

Many years ago... they only went by base pay. Unless things have changed, they probably still do.

that's strange... i think it kinda varies by who's handling your case and what not... cuz when some of my friends did their taxes this yr with hr block and stuff, they had to use BAH, bas, etc... as income and the same applied for WIC and headstart

That is weird because when you apply for WIC, food stamps, preschools based on income, etc they are actually only supposed to use base pay, hazardous duty pay, sea pay, seperation pay....anything that ends with "pay" because those are taxable incomes. BAH & BAS are not taxable & should not count.

Anya went to headstart and loved it. She did fabulous there until I was able to move her into a montessori.

I think for the main reason why you are putting him in there it will do him just fine. He needs it like we have talked before.

Ryan goes to a state preschool here at our housing and he loves it. He goes everyday from 8:30-11:30. I don't know what we will do next year since dh makes to much money now and I doubt the will have the whole bah thing figured out by next year.

BAS does count for WIC now. (at least for here) But BAH doesnt. They can't count BAH because someone who lives in housing and doesnt get BAH compared to someone who lives in PPV and does...It isnt fair. So they dont count BAH but they did just start counting BAS :neutral I was on WIC but they started counting the BAS on there so I over qualified at E's 1 year appt.

The NEVER use BAH for anything. BAH is an Allowance, non taxable and doesn't count as income. If anyone had to report their BAH for tax purposes or anything else, then they should go and get it ammended. It even says it on the dfas website.

San Diego counts BAH as income for the state preschools. They count everything, bah, bas, and even sea pay. It sucks!!!!!!!! If we lived in "navy " housing and not a ppv it would not be an issue.

We're in PPV and it did not count. The BAH is not on the W-2's that I had to show for income.

I just went through this witha friend. You can go to housing and get a letter stating the money is NOT touched at all by the service member and is the same as if you lived in 'navy' housing even though it's ppv. They have to accept it because you can't touch the money at all. its a hassle but it is possible to get arround ppv

It is a state issue it is harder than if it where local. Housing is in involed as well as some assembly women and still nothing. The are suppobaly having meetings about it. They sent out a letter to all the residents here at NTC. It is stupid they built a preschool here that not even %80 of people will actually qualify. They don't even have enough kids for an afternoon class. We were barely under the cut off for a family of five when I enrolled ds. I think it was less than $10.
