View Full Version : Would Hillary's nomination equal defeat for the dems?

So...I've been thinking. I do that sometimes. Hillary Clinton is leading, by a pretty good margin, the democratic run for the presidential nomination. I can't help but think that if she were nominated, it would spell defeat for the dems come election time. The sad thing is - I believe that her primary surface downfall is her gender. On the other hand, so many americans are sick of the way the republicans are handling things, would a woman democrat be the lesser of two evils over a male republican? What's worse? A woman or a republican? :thinking

What do you think?

As much as I'd like to believe our country would elect the president based on qualifications, I think that in the minds of many, a woman would be disqualified simply because of her God given estrogen. I think that, were the tables turned, it would be the same way if a female was winning the republican nomination race.

I think that no matter how sick of republican shanagens the country is I dont think this country is ready for either a woman or non-white president.

Its a shame though....I like her and would like to see her win!

i have several opinions about hillary but my main one is that i do NOT want her as my next president. i will be voting this year and she will not even come onto my possible radar. i'd rather elect kermit the frog than her

ETA: it has nothing to do with her being a woman

I think that there are certainly enough closed minded people in this country that wouldn't vote for her based on her gender alone that it could cause her problems, but I have faith that if the Republican candidates keep talking about war with Iran, that will tip the scales back in her favor.

I also think that the longer she campaigns the better she looks to people. The only way to change their minds is to get in front of them and show them that she is competent and capable, and so far she has done an outstanding job of that. Her poll numbers keep going up and up and up. Even more and more Republicans are liking her.

Most of all though, I think that if women would go out there and vote for THEMSELVES based on their OWN priorities, Hillary would have a real chance despite what she has between her legs. Unfortunately, most women have this preconceived notion that politics is for men or they wouldn't understand it and MOST women vote whatever their husbands vote with the assumption that their husbands understand and so they trust whoever their husband likes.

I think lately, presidential candidates are all a huge joke. I don't think I'll even waste the gas to drive down to the polling station. :whatever

I want to reiterate, this isn't a debate about personal feelings for Hillary the woman.

I just wondered if a woman being nominated, in your opinion, would spell defeat for the party as a whole.

Can I ask why not? What issues do you disagree with her on? Just curious! :P

why wouldn't you make the decision based on the person that would be best for this country? one of them has to be better than the other right?

I agree with this!!

I am ready for a change, we need a domestic minded leader, we need to take care of us now...

My husband and I do not discuss politics cause we feel differently and vote differently.

i just don't like the way she presents herself as a person. i didn't like her when her husband was in office and i dont' like her now. i think this county is absolutely unready for a strong willed woman like her. i agree with jennygirl too that the country is not ready for a woman or a non-white president. would i like to see a woman president...yes but not her. would i like to see a non-white president...yes but preferrably someone who isn't all about race (not saying any of the candidates are). i'm also very republican, not saying i don't see the opposite viewpoint i just think alot of the democratic ideas are wrong on things.

It's a waste of gas to drive there and vote for someone I don't even like or believe in. It's a waste of time to stand in line to vote for someone I don't even like.

Unless some candidate really steps it up and surprises me, I'll be watching DVDs on that night.

I know, it drives me CRAZY. I know SO MANY women like that though, and when that poll came out saying that something like 56% of women say they don't know anything about politics so they vote for whoever their husband likes, I swear my eyes almost got stuck back in my head. I have a HIGH SCHOOL education. HIGH SCHOOL. And I understand what is going on right now in politics better than my college education husband, and just as well as my FIL with a freakin masters degree who has been following politics and studying history since Vietnam. Women have so much power and they don't use it!

See, you think the last thing this country needs is "a strong willed woman like her", and I think a "strong willed woman like her" would do this country some good.

This coming from a republican.

just wanted to jump in and say so do the young adults (18-25) group but they don't vote. i think this country needs to focus on getting the young adults and the women to the polling station. this country needs to bust the idea that the individual votes don't matter.

I know how you feel! I feel like I will be voting for the lesser of two evils when I vote since the candidate that I really do like has NO CHANCE. I am willing to waste the gas just to vote for a Democrat though. LMAO. All of the Republicans SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF ME.

i think this country needs a strong willed woman just not her. i think she's too much of a "personality" for this country to be ready for her now.

This past election there was a rise in the amount of young people voting. As much as I hate MTV, they did an awesome job at promoting the importance of voting.

yep but until that trend stays then the older americans and groups like aarp will continue to dictate what our politicians say

Well, I don't base who I think would be a good president on who I like as a person, so I don't understand you there. LOL. It has more to do with their stance on the issues, their experience, their voting records, and their vision for America. I could care less if they are sweet and charming and have a good personality. I want someone who is competent and can speak in coherent sentences.

I think that we ARE ready for a strong willed female president. We have had strong willed male presidents, so why not a female? Hell, Bush is the most strong willed president I have seen in my life time, short as it is. No matter what political analysts, military generals, the UN, intelligence agents, or the rest of the world said, he did what he wanted to. Strong willed to the core. LOL. I think our country is ready for CHANGE. The election last November proved that. If the change comes in the form of a woman, I hope that doesn't stop people from voting. With the increase in young voters I think she has a chance.

I was initially uneasy about Hillary's presumed nomination. I love both Hillary and Bill but I know there are many people who would never even give Hillary a chance. I watched the first CNN Democratic debate back in June undecided about the candidates. Hillary impressed me so much that I have really become a supporter of her candidacy. I really like both her and Joe Biden, I think a Clinton-Biden president-VP combo is exactly what our country needs!

And that is totally ignorant. I mean use your own brain. That is what I love about my marriage. We both have our own opinions and don't think the others is lame. That is def a barefoot, preggers, im property so I keep my mouth shut mentality right there... :irked

No the reason I don't think it would defeat the party is that SO many women I talk too (on forums) say they will vote for JUST because she is a female. (I don't agree with voting for a candidate just because they are female to me there is SO much more that has to be going on to get my vote)

Now if another Democrat continues to run despite (if) Hilary getting the nomination from her party then THAT would defeat them in the polls because it would split the votes.

I wanted to add that I am SHOCKED to the core that anyone could think our country is not ready for a non-white or non-male president. WE are behind the rest of the world in regards to that. I think it is a change that is well past it's time & I hope we see it this election both Obama & Clinton are strong opponents hopefully one of them can make that change happen.
