An Oxnard man was killed by police over the weekend in downtown Santa Barbara after allegedly pointing a loaded gun at other people during a fight.
Santa Barbara police identified the man as Wilfred A. Turner, 24. Authorities said the former Seabee had been stationed at Naval Base Ventura County before suddenly leaving military service.
The shooting occurred around 11:50 p.m. Friday on crowded State Street after Turner and two male friends ran into another group from Oxnard, including at least three men and a 16-year-old girl, police said.
They met shortly before midnight in front of The Habit hamburger restaurant and began arguing, investigators said.
There was "bad blood" between Turner and a man in the other group over allegations that the man had been romantically involved with Turner's 20-year-old wife, authorities said.
Two uniformed police officers patrolling the streets during the city's annual Old Spanish Days Fiesta noticed the fight and came over to intervene, authorities said.
Just then, authorities said, Turner pulled out a loaded automatic handgun from his pocket and pointed the .45-caliber weapon at other people.
The two officers, who had not been identified as of Sunday evening, fired numerous rounds at Turner. He died at the scene, according to police. No one else was reported injured.
Police said they found a second handgun inside the pickup truck that Turner and his friends had driven to Santa Barbara.
Turner and his companions were stationed at the naval base in Port Hueneme until recently, police said.
Three other men were arrested on suspicion of fighting in public: Mark Anthony Smith, 22; Terence Ruben, 24; and Randall Leon Johnson, 23. Johnson, the owner of the pickup truck, also was suspected of possessing a concealed firearm in a vehicle, police said.
