Those with older kids, at what age do you feel they are old enough to walk to school on their own?

DS is 6 1/2 & begging to walk to school. Granted our subdivision is seriously next to the school. We only have 2 streets in our subdivision that are in an L shape & the school butts up to one of the streets. So he doesn't have far to walk....less than a 1/4 of a mile at best.

I just still feel he is way too young to walk on his own. He keeps telling me he knows all the rules but still.

Cat can attest that he doesn't have far to go & there are a ton of kids around walking as well. Even some younger than him that have further to go.

Am I just holding on too tight? Or is this too young?

I will say that DS is vey mature for his age but I just don't know.

I think I'd let him go and follow him at a distance to keep an eye on him...you know, mission-impossible style ;)

You mean like doing somersaults into the bushes, peeking around buildings, running next to the cars, etc? Now this could be fun! DD could be my sidekick! :lmao

i would probably let him walk since there are lots of other kids going and it's not far. i had to walk to school when i was in 4th grade. it was farther than 1/4 mile, probably half a mile or so. i was alone in the mornings too because both my parents left for work early. there were a couple of kids that were younger than me that i would walk with to school. their mom asked me if i would make sure they got there okay.

i say just ask one of the older kids if they would please help your son get to school okay.

I let my oldest son walk to school. Granted he is 9 but I am also going to be letting my twins walk to school with him next year and they will be 5. It's about a block from the house to the school. I would just let him try it and kind of follow behind him without letting him know your there to make sure everything is fine.

If I videotape it, would anyone buy it? Maybe I can make some money off of my trouble? :lol

And thank you guys for the advice! I'm just so paranoid of him walking to school....well just growing up in general. I can't believe he is going to be 7 soon! And DD is a little over 4. :tears
