Have you ever negotiated a salary? were you successful, did you compromise? any advice?

I negotiated my hourly wage and I was successful. I wasn't going to be a manager of special projects and get paid the same amount as a dispatcher position at the police station I work at, so when I got the "promotion", I spoke up. I'm not on salary though, and it's not really a "professional" job since I'm still in college.

I would say be firm but dont unresonable. in my experience when job offers are made, they are slightly on the lower end of pay scale. The employers generally have room for negotiation to some level. go to the department of labor website or anything else to help you find the true salary/worth of the job you are looking for. it can help you get what others are making for the same job in the same are.

good luck!

I negotiated my annual salary when I first started with my law firm. I also had to negotiate my 2yr raise. What you do is ask for higher than what you really want, if they really want you/or want to keep you, they'll try to meet you somewhere in the middle. That middle ground is usually where you actually wanted our salary to be. If you're confident in your skills then they'll give you what you ask for usually.:wink
