Why would you not want to breast feed for long?

I havnt used it yet, but both my sisters used it and they said it was easy, just makes thier hand hurt after awhile. I just didnt want to spend alot of money on a pump and not have my milk come in like when i had DD

I couldn't breast feed my first cause he had a cleft lip and palate, so I expressed for 3 months. This time I am breast feeding, bub is 3 1/2 months and I've cut back a bit, I'm trying to wein him slowly. Doing both breast and formula helps with weining them off you when you eventually do or if you plan to go back to work, makes it easier on you. And bub still gets some breast milk. Breast feeding can be very tiring.

I havde an awesome medala that I am gonna be selling. The only thing you would need to buy is the little insert that goes in there for it to be sterile. Its electric and can be plugged in or use batteries. If you are interested lemme know and I will find pics and what not

How much and where do you find that part?

I saw they have a manual one for 35 bucks, I may get that one to start.

The valve is only like 1-2 bucks for it. Thats the sterile portion. The pump is this

I would sell it for probably like 50. I would have to research the price to be sure. It would probably be 40 or 50 bucks total what I would sell it for

I bought an Ameda Purely Yours from the lactation consultant at the hospital for $200, I could have gotten it much cheaper online, but I needed it IMMEDIATELY, it was worth the extra $70 to have it right away. I loved that pump, used it everyday for almost year with my dd, and again for almost a year while nursing my son, never had any problems with it.

I have a The First Years double electric pump. The sticker says 49.99 but my mom got it from a lady she works with for free. I'll just have to sterilize it and get some new bottles for it.

at the clothes line they've got a medela swing pump for sale. it's a consignment so it's been used before but if you just get the sterile part then it should be fine. you should go check it out

Both of mine were free.

With Breanna I got a manual one from the hossy. This was 6 1/2 years ago and I'm sure there are better ones out there today but I swore I would never use a manual again after this thing. It took forever to get the milk out and my hands were killing me by the end, too.

With Johnny John's old chief gave us hers. She had never used it and didn't plan on having anymore kids. It is a double electric Medela pump. When I priced it at Babies R Us they wanted almost $300 for it. I love the thing. It has a place to keep bottles of EBM cold and a part for the extra parts. It also looks like a briefcase so nobody knows you're carrying around your pump. And it has an attachment for batteries if you're not near an outlet. This was very very important for me since we lived in FL. at the time and it was the year after those 4 hurricanes hit. I wanted to make sure if we lost power I was still able to use my pump. Plus, with traveling you can't always pump using an outlet. I still have the pump and have used it with Evan, too, so it def. would have been worth the money if we had bought it.

Just be careful if you get your pump second-hand. As you probably know, breastmilk can harbor certain diseases, including HIV. With pumps, the electric pumping mechanism itself can hold onto bacteria/viruses. Loaner pumps that hospitals use are made specially so they don't do this.

that's very true. that's why i'd only get mine from my aunt or a close friend who i know doesn't have diseases. i'm a paranoid person though

just remember you don't have to be a "cultish" breastfeeding mommy. i say try it and if you like it and want to continue doing it great. there are so many mommies that aren't cult like about it that you can find great support that isn't saying if you have to formula feed you are the devil or what have you kwim?

Very true. Thats why I am ok selling the Medela tho. All of it can be sterizled EXCEPT for the valve which is why I said a new valve would be needed! The little valve isnt expensive tho. And the rest of it can be fully sterizlied in boiling water, dishwasher, steamer etc.

With my 1st baby I spent about $230 on a medela double electric and very rarely used it. If you are not totally sure if you want to bf or not I would recommend renting a pump from the hospital at first until you decide on bf is for you or not.

I just had a manual one, it still worked well, I think it was Avent

With Ethan I just bought a manual one. I ended up having a low milk supply that PCOS helped cause and I couldnt breastfeed past 4 months. I did buy an electric one to help production but in the end nothing helped so I was out that $. With Ashley I was given the medela as a gift and it works really well. So truthfully if you are looking into one I highly reccomend the medela. I have used like 4 different brands and that 1 seemed the best to me.

So instead of spending a huge amount at first I would suggest either renting one or something and then once you decide if you wanna breastfeed get the higher priced one.

I paid $300 for the Medela Pump in Style back in 2001. Great investment. I had it checked in May of this year and it works as well as it did 7 years ago.
