View Full Version : 2 Attacked By Rabid Beaver At Loch Raven Reservoir
Jennygirl 08-18-2007, 09:04 PM (CBS) TOWSON, Md. A warning from the Baltimore County Health Department following last weekend's attacks on two swimmers by a rabid beaver. A 14-year-old boy and an adult woman were attacked north of Loch Raven Dam while swimming in the reservoir.
"The boy was rescued by his mother. The female swimmer was rescued by her husband and a good Samaritan. In this instance, the 50-pound beaver was killed with a rock. It tested positive for rabies," Rabies Coordinator Gary Thompson tells Richard Sher.
The Baltimore County Health Department reminds you to avoid contact with wildlife if possible, keep your pets up to date on their rabies shots and remember that swimming is not allowed in any drinking water reservoirs.
Miss B Hav'n 08-18-2007, 09:15 PM Oh my! I know it is NOT funny at all, in fact it is awful, but I still can't help laughing at the mental image of a rabid beaver (am I going to hell for that?).
tna111905 08-20-2007, 08:51 AM I do believe that your not supposed to be swimming in loch raven dam. But damn thats really close to my real home. Im glad I never went up there
USCGBoxerMom 08-20-2007, 08:55 AM Sad story...but I too got a good laugh at the image of a rabid beaver!!
Green~Mammy 08-20-2007, 09:56 AM It's a drinking water reservoir so no swimming in there. Still for rabies you have to get 20 something shots in your stomach that sucks.
Jennygirl 08-20-2007, 10:24 AM I have the rabbies vax...I got three in my arms! IT HURTS LIKE HELL!! But i am good or should be good if i get bit by something...
LittleMsSunshine 08-20-2007, 02:41 PM Omg... a rabid beaver... now that's something you don't see every day...

The shots are no longer done in the stomach, they are only 7 shots done in the arm over a 28 day period. I only know because a girl I knew....her son got bit by a dog that ran off and couldn't be found.
Jennygirl 08-20-2007, 03:23 PM Mine was only three...But mine was a prophalactic...

That is the reg VAX most people don't get it though, you work with animals so did you HAVE to get it? The one for if you get bit is a whole lotta pain. I am so scared rabies because I HATE needles.
Aundi 08-20-2007, 04:12 PM I thought though, that EVEN with the prophylactic one, if you actually get bit by something, you will need two more shots to be fully protected. You wouldn't need all 7 but 2 more at that point.
Again only know this because of a family member that works with animals and actually runs a huge well known cat rescue.
Aundi 08-20-2007, 04:15 PM found this on CDC
Purpose of preexposure prophylaxis
Preexposure prophylaxis is given for several reasons. First, although preexposure vaccination does not eliminate the need for additional medical attention after a rabies exposure, it simplifies therapy by eliminating the need for human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) and decreasing the number of vaccine doses needed – a point of particular importance for persons at high risk of being exposed to rabies in areas where immunizing products may not be available, and it minimizes adverse reactions to multiple doses of vaccine. Second, it may enhance immunity in persons whose postexposure therapy might be delayed. Finally, it may provide protection to persons with inapparent exposures to rabies.
Jennygirl 08-20-2007, 04:25 PM Right I get fewer shots than the average person would...Every year I can have my levels checked to see how much is still in my system.
But it STILL HURT LIKE HELL!! the needle was very long!
They were very strict with me when I got it, if i was one day off (before or after) I would have had to start over.
Aundi 08-20-2007, 04:35 PM That would make me feel safer especially working around animals! I tell you, anymore I just won't touch animals that come in my yard like cats and dogs because after my friends son got bit it really made me think!
Also in Maine my sons teacher had a bat get into his home through his chimney. Well they took his cats (who had killed the bat) and wouldn't give his cats back until the bat was tested. His cats would have been kept for upwards of 6 weeks (they were vaccinated even) if it had been positive and also he would have had to have been treated (since he was sleeping) and they say bats can bite you in your sleep and you can not know.
Rabies freaks me out:no:no

I live like 15 minutes away. I almost pee'd myself laughing when I saw the title of this post, then to see that it was a place I used to swim (and yes, I don't think you are suppose to swim there), I just about died! Everyone at my work was looking at me like I was crazy.
