View Full Version : Biting off more than I can chew???
queentreev1004 08-20-2007, 01:12 PM I am taking 18 hours this semester in college (6 classes) and I already work part time but I'm trying to get another job as well. Matter of fact I interview for it in the next hour or so my co-worker just told me that I would be biting off more than I can chew but my "F:censored U Fund" isn't enough to help me get out and on my own right now. I gotta have a place for me and Jas like yesterday so...What do u girls think? U think I can handle an 8-5 MWF and then 5-10 those same nights and then TR school 8-2 and then work 5-10???? Or am i plain :nutts
valerie 08-20-2007, 01:16 PM that seems like a lot to me. i am taking 15 credit hours and working 30 hours a week and that is too much. and you with your daughter, that seems like a lot to me. but i am sure you can do it if you have help. good luck
queentreev1004 08-20-2007, 01:56 PM thanks valerie...the more i think about it the more I'm thinking that i am crazy but I'm going to give it a whirl and if I get overwhelmed I will chalk it up to life experience and not sweat it.
Debra 08-20-2007, 01:59 PM It does seem like a lot! I know for me, I wouldn't be able to handle it! More power to you, though! Just take it one day at a time! If it doesn't work, stay positive like you are! :hugs
MichelleB 08-20-2007, 01:59 PM That seems like a lot to me. I worked almost full time and went to school full time to support myself, but I didn't have a family for the first few years and it was hard. I couldn't imagine trying to take all that on with a baby. From experience, I have learned that if you take on too much something ends of suffering.
Good luck with everything!!
fridayheather 08-20-2007, 10:03 PM I'd go ahead and try it, you can always quit one of the jobs if it gets to be too much. I'm taking 16 credit hours starting next week and I started working again today (I'm a school bus driver, school started back today) for 30 hours a week. I actually feel better when I keep so busy, kwim? As long as you feel your DD is getting enough attention from you (mine goes with me in the morning on the bus and she will be going to daycare in the afternoons 4 days a week starting tomorrow), I don't see why you shouldn't be able to handle it.
Good luck!!
Nicci 08-22-2007, 09:50 AM You'll never know till you try. I work 50 hours a week and take 5 classes per semester and I get by...I don't have much of a social life at all but the way I see it, its only temporary. One summer semester I took 4 accelerated 5 week classes at the community college, so I was in class like 8 hours a day...that was hell...but it was only 5 week and I got through it. If it's too much you can always drop a class or two.
carol68134 08-22-2007, 01:40 PM A lot of it depends on the classes you are taking. If they are in subjects that are particularly hard for you, or very homework-intensive classes, it might be a bad idea. But it sounds like you will at least have the weekend free, plus a few hours in the afternoons after classes to study and do homework. It sounds difficult but doable.
Turtle2_6 08-22-2007, 01:50 PM I took 15 units and worked 30 hours one semester. It was so hard and my grades weren't as good as they could be...Just try not to overload yourself and focus on school
harrisonsdream 08-22-2007, 02:00 PM what are you taking?
i've done the 18 hours and lets just say that if i was attempting to work 2 jobs or hell even 1 i would've been a nutcase.

That's true Nicci. That's how I'm looking at it as it's only temporary you know until I am able to get me and Jas a place on our own away from my ex. Well not too far in Nashville :giggle but still you know a place that is ours. I'm taking 2 o f my courses online and the other 4 are on campus back to back from 8-1:45 on Tuesday and Thursday .

this is my first semester of school so I am taking English 101, Math 101 (too much of a whip to take Math 110),Personal Finance,Intro to Management,Intro to Business, and Microcomputer Systems
harrisonsdream 08-22-2007, 02:46 PM ok honestly those freshman classes are ALOT of reading, the english class is alot of writing, personal finance and intro to management and intro to business typically have alot of homework involved. just really look at how much time you are going to have because alot of homework and working 2 jobs and making the grades you need and putting your all into a relationship is alot of work. it looks like you have a child too. that's alot of commitments. good luck hun i wish you the best.

I've taken most of those classes! All but personal finance. Microcomputer systems is a really easy, intro class. I think it's one they make everybody take. They act like the entire class has never seen a computer in their lives. Week 1: "this is a mouse." I'm serious. English 101 is a lot of writing but it's mostly creative writing and writing on personal experiences, there isn't a lot of time-intensive research involved. Math 101 is hard, I'm not gonna lie. Lots of homework and studying involved. Intro to business and intro to management aren't too bad, not a lot of homework but you do have to study a lot. I think you'll do fine with this schedule.
harrisonsdream 08-22-2007, 03:24 PM when do you start? wait until you get your syllabi and then look to see how much work it'll actually involve

the only free time i will have will be on weekends and then during the week I will only be home 5 hours out of the day and that is when DD is asleep hopefully. I know it sounds :screwy but it's what I've got to do right now. My daughter and my education are my first priority right now especially since me and DF are not together anymore.

Yeah you're right the micro was like :nutts "I know what a computer is" The Math , Management, and English are the most work for me since the Computer class is like intro and it's stuff I mainly know already. The other 2 business classes my teacher just likes to run his mouth but he doens't give us lots of homeworks and he gives us detailed reviews before tests and open book quizzes and i have him for my personal finance and intro to business. I'm thinking I can handle it ok but once it gets farther into the semester I don't know.

I started classes last Tuesday and I'ave looked overthem and like u said it is going to take ALOT of my time I just have to make sure I manage my time wisely.
harrisonsdream 08-22-2007, 03:43 PM get a calender like one of those big desk calenders and write out your plan for the day and what you want to accomplish on each day. try and get ahead as much as you can.

That is an awesome idea! I'm going to get one today and put on my desk at home. It will definitely keep me organized and keep me on task. Thanks girlie. :hugs
harrisonsdream 08-22-2007, 06:06 PM no problem. when i took that many hours i didn't work and didn't have a child but it still helped. and remember it's okay to say i need to cut back on something if you get overwhelmed. keep an eye on the drop dates for classes though
