JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Since her 13-year-old daughter vanished Monday, Stella Browne says she has been getting text messages from the girl saying that someone followed her and that she woke up in a dark basement.

"Help. I'm scared. I don't know where I am," one of the text messages that Natasha Browne sent her mother said, Stella Browne told The Jersey Journal of Jersey City for Wednesday's newspapers.

The message went on to say: "Someone was following me and I just don't remember what happened. I just woke up in a basement. I'm scared."

Jersey City police have classified Browne's disappearance as suspicious. They planned to hold a 3 p.m. news conference to discuss their investigation.

Browne went missing Monday morning after leaving home for school. Her mother said she's only received text messages from her daughter, and that she has not called nor is she answering her cell phone.

"At this point, because of the circumstances surrounding this case, we are strongly and actively pursuing all means to find this young lady," said police Lt. Joseph Connors.

I agree 100% I can't imagine being the mom and getting these helpless text messages from my daughter, and then having some jackass leak it to the press. But we alllll know that most journalists don't care about anything but the story. Why don't they use their HEAD??

Of course, there's always the possibility that it's a hoax - and maybe they are thinking along those lines so leaking to the media may be a tool to bring her out.

but to risk a childs life like that what if its not a hoax and she gets killed?

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. First thought was omg how could they print that. They will know it is her and do some god awful things to her now. 2nd thought was maybe her daughter ran away or something...

Either way very sad and I truly hope if it isnt a hoax that she is alright especially with the media leaking that

I agree with you girls. That was not good. But I hope that means they are stepping up quicker to find her.

I think it is suspicious. I doubt the police would of let out that info for the press to report if they TRULY thought this girl was indeed in danger.

Was it the police who leaked the information to the press? Or was it a family member hell bent on doing what they felt was right? Ive seen reports that point either direction.

Either way, I hope they do what they have to do, to ensure this girl's safe return.

Text-Messaged Abduction Claim in Doubt
By WAYNE PARRY, Associated Press Writer

Jersey City Police Chief Robert Troy, listens to a ...
JERSEY CITY, N.J. - A missing teenage girl who allegedly sent her mother text messages claiming that she had been abducted was found in New York on Thursday and was hospitalized amid suspicions she pulled a hoax.

Jersey City Police Chief Robert Troy said the 13-year-old girl, who had last been seen by her mother on Monday, approached a man on a Brooklyn street at 1 a.m. Thursday and said she had been raped by two men. The man called police.

"The credibility of what happened here is in doubt, but we'll give her every benefit of the doubt to make sure that if anything happened, she'll get the help she needs," Troy said.

Police said the girl had no serious health problems.

"We believe the majority of things she's done since she went out of the house has been voluntary," Capt. Jack Wisely said.

After she vanished, the girl's mother received text messages from her daughter's cell phone saying that someone followed her and that she woke up in a dark basement. One message said a man was making the girl do things she did not want to do.

Wisely said the girl had skipped school Monday and met with at least one young man. The two parted company in the afternoon, Wisely said. He said police were trying to account for the girl' whereabouts over the following two days.

The girl's cell phone battery died Monday, frustrating attempts to locate her or verify her movements since then, he added.

"If it turns out to be a total hoax, quite frankly, I feel sorry for (the girl) and her parents," Troy said. "I would not say that precludes us from bringing any charges."
