Do you keep a gun in the house? How many? Those that have children, do you keep the gun in one place and the ammo in another or just keep it all together? Is it in a locked cabinet or out in the open (so to speak)

Dh and I do not have any guns or anything in the house. He probably would but I have had a few childhood friend that either killed themselves (on accident and on purpose) I am terrified of having a gun.

We have guns. They are for hunting and protection. They are kept in a closet on a high self and the guns are locked. Bullets are seperate.

I was raised with guns in the house and I have a gun in mine. We were taught from a very young age about guns and we knew the dangers. It was never an issue and even if you don't have guns in YOUR house, you children very likely could be exposed to them at a friends house so gun safety is a huge issue for me... very important. When my kids get old enough, they will be taught to shoot. My nephew who is in first grade can already handle a gun (supervised always). My father is a big gun advocate so I don't find guns in my home a scary thing. Now my sister, who was raised exactly the same as I was... has a completely different outlook and up until she was scared to death in her home that she reconsidered her "no guns in her house" rule.

Nope. no guns in my house.

I'd rather have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it. I was also raised that you always have your gun loaded with the safety on. In a situation where you are faced with having to actually use the gun, the last thing you want to have to think about is loading or finding bullets. That was just how I was raised.

I was raised around guns. I learned to shoot when I was 9. When I was 16, I owned a 12 guage shot gun. I do think the people who own these guns, should know gun safety. Gun cabinets, safety locks, etc.

My DF has a PTC, he carries a sig 40 at all times, along with many other guns between the two of us. Our kids will know how to shoot, and safety of guns.

If she wants to learn, I'll teach DD to shoot when she is old enough. Im a pretty good shot myself ;)

We were raised with guns in the home or in my grandpa's home. We were taught very early that they aren't toys. My mom never let us play with toy guns just so we didn't have confusion on that... I have never "played" with a gun and I don't know anyone in my family that has. I think just as anything else if someone even an unpredictable child, if you are properly taught about the pros and cons it can be controlled.

I don't have a gun in the house but I wouldn't object either...

My nephew is 7, he has had a bb gun since he was 5. His father taught him about guns and what they can do and such.. He is only 7, but he doesn't "play" with his gun and when he is shooting it, he doesn't dare aim at anyone or anything other than his cans or whatever it is they have then....

We do not. I am just not comfortable with the idea. I found out by accident that DH was storing a gun for a friend and it was NOT a pretty conversation (mostly because since I didn't know it was here I couldn't be sure I was doing everything necessary to keep the kids from accidentally coming across it) and the gun has since gone home. Neither DH or I are into recreational shooting, we don't hunt and we have no need of one for protection so there is really no reason for us to have a gun.

Well, like the others were raised that way, I wasn't. I do get that a lot of bad things can happen which is why a lot of people choose to have them.

I have no issue with guns, they just don't belong in my house. locked up or not, I am not comfortable with it. DH, if he chooses to have guns, will keep them in a locker...not in my house.

If you have more than one gun then I understand the lock box issue but what good is a gun if it is not accessible when you need it? My dad has many many guns and they are all in cabinets EXCEPT the one that he intends to use if he has to... that one is easily accessible to HIM. He usually carries it ON him except when he's sleeping or out in public. When he's asleep, it's within arms length and when he's out in public, it stays in his vehicle.

ETA: He lives out in the country and this is for protection against animals as well as home invasion. He has used it several times on snakes while out on his 4-wheeler.

I agree, your sidearm should stay at your SIDE at all times. Or at least in the car. The gun cabinet is good for assault rifles, shotguns, other random hand guns.

We have a gun but it will never be fired but thats not to say it cant. It is a Japanese sniper rifle from WW2. My grandpa took it off of a dead Jap. It still has all the markings on it and the emperors markings on it so I am assuming this person was to protect the emperor. If anyone knows about WW2 then you know that back then when we took firearms we filed off any markings and well my grandpa never turned it in I guess. This thing comes to my shoulder with the bayonet attached and I am 5ft 10! According to the research I did there is only 500 like this gun worldwide still in existance and I have one of them.

No, no guns here........neither one of us was raised around guns. No one in my family hunts and the same goes for his family. I just don't really see the point of a gun in the house.........and neither of us would hunt......so if you factor both of those in, no guns.

No freakin way. I am in NO WAY prepared to use a gun so why would I have one in my house? MAYBE after some lessons I would feel comfortable having one in the house, but I still don't think I would be comfortable actually pulling the trigger when there is a human being standing at the other end.

Adam on the other hand would have no problem shooting an intruder, so if he wants a gun for protection he can have it, but it is his responsibility to keep it where he can get to it if he plans to use it.

Yeah it is a cool piece of history. I mean the wood on the gun still has blood on it from way back then. Now it is not as bright in color but its there. I want to get it appraised but I cant locate a place to do it in WA.

It is not in a case, it is in its original case from WW2 and wrapped in padding then in a soft towel in a dark part of the closet. I want a air controlled case for it so it does not rust, even though it has not, hell the bayonet is still in the same condition it was back then. I will pull it out and get a couple pics of it here in a few.

josh hunts so we will have guns in our house. as long as they are kept unloaded in a safe place i don't mind. when we have kids they will be locked away, the kids will not have access to them unless they are going hunting with their dad. i will stand firm on that!

i think the reason that people keep their ammo/clip and gun separate because it adds an extra sense of security if you have children. not to mention i know on base the housing you sign a part of your lease that says that you won't keep the ammo and gun in the same place let alone a gun loaded

I have no idea how many exactly we have... Probably more then 18, less then 24..

The newest one is a DPMS Panther .223 :rolleyes http://www.impactguns.com/store/dpms_223.html

DH has also been out in the garage making an M4, he ordered the blueprints off the internet.. I have no idea where he's going to get a barrel for it, I'm betting he'll steal one from the scrap pile at work..

DS knows to leave them alone, most are locked up, some aren't..

I have 3 kids, and 4 guns in the house. 2 guns are just bb guns. The other 2 are in an open unlocked cabinet. However, they are disabled. There is no firing pin in them at all, and other parts have been removed, and we have trigger locks on them. The only reason we have them is because my MIL insisted my hubby take them when her dad died. She couldn't bear having them, but didn't want her sister to get all the guns (yeah, she's stupid). I did not want the guns, and even with them disabled I had thoughts of putting them back together and using them on myself for a long time after we first got them. Thank God I had no idea how to put them back together, but the nightmares and the thoughts were enough drive me crazy. Maybe that's what the MIL wanted....yeah, she's like that. I made it through though, and thankfully no longer have those thoughts.

we don't have any. guns scare the poop out of me. DH used to say he wanted to get one for the house/for me when he's gone, but he gave up after awhile.

*IF* i was comfortable around them/knew how to use them/etc and we had one it would definitely be locked up, unloaded, where there's no way the kids can get to them.

Tim wants to get one when he returns, and I said it was ok under certain circumstances. They aren't here for protection so they will be locked up with the key elsewhere and amo elsewhere. I am uneasy about it and so they can't be in the bedroom.

We don't have one in our house. John does have a rifle he stores at his dad's. He is trying to talk me into having one here. Having one in my house makes me extremely nervous. I took away the toy guns Johnny got this Christmas from my in-laws cause Breanna put them up to her head and said she was going to blow her brains out. I couldn't grab them away from her and toss them in the trash fast enough. I grew up with shotguns in the house. They were never locked up. I'm not sure about the ammo. But I never touched them. My mom and my dad are both really good shots, too. My step-dad is a Marine vet and he admits my mom shoots better than him. I'm slowly slowly considering it but I don't know. I'm really nervous about it.

ITA with the above! :yes I think that people need to teach their children about gun safety, even if they don't have them, just like I think that schools need to teach about condoms, even though I believe in abstinence.

That is amazing. I just saw a picture of my grandfather burning a Jap flag overseas. I have been through some of his pictures from WWII, like him and his shipmates shoveling snow off the flight deck of a carrier, and them doing the shellback ceremony. He has some amazing pics, but nothing half so neat as a Jap gun. Holy moly. You own an awesome piece of history.

Toby would LOVE to have a gun (you know working at a gun range and all :rolleyes) But now that we have Ellie, it scares me. I have just heard sooo many horror stories and have been in a school shooting when I was a freshman, so have a gun in the house really scares me. If it was just me and him, I dont think I would care, but with her in the house, I just am not comfortable with it. Now we have an airsoft gun that is kept in the garage in a big safe (I know its not a real gun, but it still friggen hurts!) and that is just for play or target shooting in the back yard. But I mean I could use that for defense too. It can sure as hell take an eye out! So IMO as long as we have that one, we dont need a real one :lol
