So..I'm now considering getting my RN. Right now I'm a 3rd year Psychology major. I figure being a nurse would be something that I can move across the country with, and be able to get a job. It would be a great job to have children with, too. I'm not going to change my major now, because that would be crazy.

My question is, how long would it take me full-time? Since I will already have my BA in Psychology?

I asked my mom who is an RN and she said as long as you have the right clases with your BA it would take about another year. Hope that helps.

That's not bad at all. I just need to make sure I take some more biology and sciences I guess. I already have organic chemistry and human biology.

It depends. Are you going to want to go ahead and get your BSN or just your RN?? I'm in a RN program and it takes 18 months ( atleast here in VA) but I was originially in a BSN program and it would take 2 years or more ( depending on if you have all the classes you need already) I personally like the RN/ hospital based program b/c you have more hands on training where getting your BSN is more classroom and theory. PM me if you have any questions

i went into an RN program in NY but changed to medical assistanting because it was a national cert. i wouldn't have to be relicensed in every state i lived in. but most states require you to do clinicals as well. as a CMA i ride under the physican i work for malpractice insurance. so i don't need my own,i am also a cert. phelebotomist, my cert just expired last year i didn't bother to renew it. i was working in allergy and asthma and never drew blood. good luck though. i am sure with all the classes pretty much taken care of maybe a microbiology and some nurse management classes and the clinicals you should be good..

I've been thinking of going back to school for nursing. It seems both marketable and profitable.

Where would you go? I have looked online at the programs at Rhode Island College and UMASS.

Once you have a BA degree in anything you can enroll in an accelerated BSN program which can be 12-16 months of going to school 40 hours a week. Nursing is a great profession, not only is it in demand, it is so flexible.

If you want just your RN then it could take a year depending on if you need your sciences.

If you're looking to get a BSN then it could take longer than a year.

Since you'll have your BA in psych then I'd just get an ADN RN.

You can later get a MSN since you have a BA.

Being a nurse has a much higher income potential, more demand in the field especially with the ratio changing in some states, and if you get into the right field right away you can pretty much write you're own ticket later.

Some nurses in California make over one hundred thousand a year so the money is out there and the ratio has changed so more nurses are needed here.

I'm a nurse, I work on the weekends when hubby is home and I'm home all week. So the kids rarely have to go to the sitters and with the differentials on the weekends I make pretty good money.

PM me if you have any questions.

You should..I know UMASS Dartmouth has a great program.

I wouldn't get it for another 2 years(when I finish my BA in Psych.), Mike and I would get married, then I would find a school where he is stationed to get my degree. That's my very tentative plan :giggle
