View Full Version : Jobs with no degree?
Rachee03 08-27-2007, 09:01 PM Im trying to find what I want to do with the rest of my life, or well, the next few years at least, but I have no idea even where to begin. :dunno I dont have a degree, and the only real experience I have is in pharmacy. Dont know if I want to stick around there, but at least its always a backup. Do any of you have carreers, but no degree? Ill be going back to school eventually, but it will be a while, I need something to do in the meantime, and also some direction on where to put my focus on school. Im almost 23, and I dont know what I want to be when I grow up....
I'm a full-time student right now so I don't have a degree, and I work as a dispatcher/special projects manager at a police department. I basically just put together powerpoint presentations, use excel for some of the bookeeping, flyers, etc. And I type all of the letters and briefs because the cops, chief and Lt. have very poor grammar skills :giggle And as a dispatcher I just answer the emergency line. So you could do something like that-secreterial work.
I'm also a medical records tech at a medical office. They trained me, sometimes they want you to have a transcription certificate or experience. Both jobs are easy, pay okay (it's good pay for a college student) and trained me. There are definetly jobs out there for people without a degree yet :hugs
chelsea<3josh 08-27-2007, 09:16 PM i have my degree, but did not like the direction in my field i was going into. i took a look at things, and decided going back to school was the best option for me, but in my searching for a new job (before deciding to go back to school) i found that it was hard to find a decent paying job without a degree. however, i think that they are out there, you just have to search for them! i dont know if being an nanny would be an option? also, like kara mentioned secretarial work would be good. with experience in pharmacy i would think you may be able to get into a doctor's office, or hospital doing filing, etc.
it is hard, even with a degree to find a good job, you have to really look. have you ever looked into talking to an employment agency, they could get you in some sort of temp to hire position, or even a headhunter, they help you find jobs as well. you can tell them where you have interests and they do the job hunting for you!
im 24 and still debate law school. it's okay to not know what you wanta do, but i know it is a frustrating feeling! :goodvibes
nisa81 08-27-2007, 10:38 PM I am a Paralegal. I only have my certification and no degree. I started as a receptionist in this field when I graduated high school in 99. I enjoyed it but ventured out to retail and payroll specialist. I realized that the legal field was what I wanted to do. I do attend school currently to get my BS in Paralegal Studies. Whether or not down the road I want to change my career path, I can do so. We have all the time in the world, school and careers aren't going anywhere.
sandidwane 08-28-2007, 03:30 AM I do not have a degree but have an "uncanny" ability to learn things very easily (as written on a review I got at my last company). I do think I learn fast but not quite like they worded it. I went from the AP Supervisor to a Fixed Asset Accountant in about 4 months and my pay raise was 49% (no, not a typo - I was shocked as well). It was a great job with great pay and benefits, but then my DH joined the Air Force and we had to move. I lost the job and have not been able to find anything near that again. I do believe that with moving around so often it would be a very large benefit when trying to find employment, especially a government job. I have the experience to equal a pretty high GS job, but not the education so I never get picked to even interview for anything (even lower level).
I guess all this typing really means:
Education will help you a lot especially if you are a spouse of a military member, but not required.
Best of luck!! :tu
Victoria 08-28-2007, 03:38 AM Why not get a degree in pharmacology since you're already familiar with the "backgraund"?
Many college graduates don't work in the field of their degree. :)
My parents always told me "I don't care if you get a degree in basket-weaving. As long as you have that piece of paper, that's ALL that matters..."

OOo girl, I hate the pharmacy. Haha. Im certified to be a tech, so I know I'll be able to get back into that without a problem, (its what I do now, but Im moving to virginia, so I"ll need a new job). I could never be a pharmaist, Ick. Way too much school, and responsibility :lmao I just thought Id like to try something new, But I have no idea where to even begin....I wish they just tagged you when you graduated HS with what you'd love and that was that....
