So most likely (hopefully) DB and I will be headed out west in about a month. He "should" get stationed somewhere in Washington. But out delimma is that he wants to get a new car because all of our stuff wont fit in the car we have now:screwy. I personally don't see the point in buying a new car just to fit stuff in it but...
We were thinking about renting a u-haul and then just hauling the car behind the Uhaul...has anyone done that? is that a good idea? And I was also wondering if there is any place that you can just take your stuff to and then they will ship it for you? We don't have much stuff just like 5 boxes at the most.... Do you think it would be too expensive to ship it USPS??
Ideas ladies?? Thanks

Awww...cool you're in Saratoga Springs! Bryan was there before he reported to his first duty station too! :)
I'd go to the Post Office with your boxes in hand to get a calculation. I also believe you can do your calculations online.
Expensive or not, what the military doesn't reimburse you for, you can claim as a moving expense on your taxes next year!!!! :D

I drove out here vs. towing my car behind the u-haul, and saved almost $200!!!! If you get decent gas mileage, and have a buddy who'll drive the truck, chances are it will be cheaper just to drive!(I drove 1200 miles) They charge so much for renting that dolly!
Good luck! :hugs

Becareful on what they will move. They will move HIS stuff not yours unless you are married. You have to be on his DEERS page 2. Have him find out forsure before you get to excited.

I know they aren't going to pay for me to move, and that's totally fine. It's just I was hoping that we could like UPS the 4 boxes we have or whatever and maybe they will pay him back? What is "deers" by the way?? I don't think they will pay for anything for me unless we're married...which again...is ok I don't expect anything. I just wish he would find this stuff out himself instead of letting me do it :shock apparently nobody he works with has any answers. they should visit this site lol

I don't know if I can even explain DEERS. It is a report sheet that has many of the important information like dependents and stuff. You would need to be on his page 2 of that and be on his orders for them to pay for your stuff.
As for the shipping, he would need to talk to his higher ups or the orderly room for that information. He will also be alloted so much weight.
Good Luck.

You can claim the stuff you mail as a DITY move as well. We've done it a couple times, just be aware that apparently the rules have changed. They will only reimburse USPS regular mail, not Priority, not UPS, not FedEx...is what they told us when we moved (couple months ago) and also, they'll only pay for one stop. The move prior to last I mailed stuff to my parents, who then forwarded it on to me when we got housing. I was only allowed to claim one ship, so I claimed the one that cost the most. We've also rented a uhaul, towed the truck and all that. We made more money on that one, than what was ever reimbursed in our taxes.
