BEIJING (AFP) - China's military successfully hacked into the Pentagon's computer network, raising fears it could disrupt the US defence department's systems, the Financial Times reported Tuesday.

The Chinese military's cyber attack was carried out in June following months of efforts, the London-based newspaper said, citing unnamed current and former US officials.

While the Pentagon declined to say who was behind the hacking, which led to the shutdown of a computer system serving the office of Defence Secretary Robert Gates, officials told the paper it was China's People's Liberation Army.

"The PLA has demonstrated the ability to conduct attacks that disable our system," the paper quoted a former US official as saying.

One senior US official reportedly said the Pentagon had pinpointed the exact origin of the attack.

The paper quoted another person familiar with the event as saying there was a "very high level of confidence... trending towards total certainty" that the PLA was responsible.

The paper said both the US and Chinese militaries were widely assumed to conduct computer espionage on each other.

"But US officials said the penetration in June raised concerns to a new level because of fears that China had shown it could disrupt systems at critical times," the Financial Times reported.

A spokesman for the Chinese defence ministry declined to comment on the report when contacted by AFP on Tuesday.

China's foreign ministry also declined to comment immediately, asking for questions to be faxed through.

Reports of China hacking into German government systems were also raised last week between Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

German weekly Der Spiegel reported that espionage programmes traced to the PLA had been detected in computer systems at Merkel's office, the foreign ministry and other government agencies in Berlin.

"We in the government took (the reports) as a matter of grave concern," Wen said after meeting Merkel.

What's that all about?!?!? I thought we were allies with China?

Agh! F*cktards! I've had a bad feeling about their damn government for a while now..... this shit just pisses me off.

They should be more f*cking loyal... we import enough of their crap.... I can't help but wonder how devastated that country would be if we cut off all trade. (Not that it'd ever happen, cause it'd cripple us so bad as well)

GAH!

I posted a while back about China and Russia completing a joint military training operation that is aimed at us. They are far from being allies with the US.

China is probably scared we are going to target them soon, after the reasons for going into Iraq turned out to be lies. I knew that this war was going to have horrible repercussions for us for years to come, and I think we are starting to see them. The world is scared that the US is a loose cannon and I'm not surprised that any other country is trying to take an offensive approach.

Besides, China isn't an ally, they are an interest. We are mutually beneficial to each other right now, but that doesn't mean that we aren't watching each other carefully. I bet more countries are watching us than ever before. When you preemptively stroke another country and occupy it, other countries are gonna be paranoid. Especially ones with governments unlike our own.

When you put it into those terms.... I can't say I'd really blame them.... :dunno

Still though... not cool.

Exactly very well said.

I don't know why we ever got into bed with China in the first place. We trade with them and give them business, and favorable trade nation status YET our reason for not doing ANY business with Cuba is that it is a communist country. The whole thing is wrong. I don't trust the Chinese government at all.

Oh - but we'll still continue to buy all of their merchandise and support their trade...since we save so much money and all. They're our buddies!!

:rolleyes

Have I mentioned that I'm so over China?

Yes, they would - you are absolutely right. And wouldn't that be wonderful?? China is the reason I don't even shop at Walmart anymore. As a nation of consumers, we seriously have to put our MONEY WHERE OUR MOUTHS ARE. Our government isn't going to do it for us. I'm just fed up. The bib recall was the final straw. The only time I EVER go to Walmart now is when I get digi pics developed because I upload them to the walmart site and pick them up in the 1hour photo center.

I talked to my FIL and my husband about this, and they doubt that it even really happened. An unnamed source from a foreign paper that talked to secret officials that said they didn't know who was behind it but named the Chinese military? Sounds fishy. Especially since it is so easy to clone an IP from "China" to make yourself untraceable. My FIL is a network administrator with a very large financial firm and manages the security of their network. All of the attempts to hack they get are from "China", even though none of them are actually FROM China. LOL.

That's a valid point you have there, Wicked.

Still doesn't make it any less reasonable to boycott the country :rofl

Wicked

Or WalMart for that matter. I boycott out of sheer annoyance... and because stupid Sam's Club fired my husband for something he didn't do once. LOL.

well the thing about Walmart is that living down here in corpus or portland its closer and thats the only reason why we go there. I happen to think walmart sucks in alot of ways speciallly down here. I just cant wait until we can get out of here and get back to a bigger place that has decent commissaries and more stores other than walmart and target and a few stores in the malls. so when you dont have much choices to go to you end up having to go to walmart.
