Okay - I am at my wits end with DS and medicine :banghead:banghead He is IMPOSSIBLE to give any kind of medicine to (with the exception, thank God, of his digestive stuff which is a powder that I can sneak into his milk). I have tried different flavors/brands, forms (liquid/pill), etc - no luck. I have tried reasoning, threatening, forcing (usually end up wearing more than he swallows) - it is just our big power struggle. DD has NEVER been like this. I have always just been able to tell her "Open up" - or, now that she is older, "take this" - and she does. Seriously, I feel like a failure as a parent because I can't even get DS to take a simple dose of cold medicine (he is 6, btw). I haven't done anything differently with him than I did with DD - why is he so different??? (okay, I know, he's a different child...I'm just frustrated)
Does anyone else have a difficult child? If so, how have you gotten past this?

Wow.. DD is 3 and she has her moments when it's almost impossible to give her medicine. I've had to wrestle her down and give it to her before. Good luck!

DD used to be like that when she was a little over a year old, now she takes it better, but I would either sneak it in her sippy cup.. which obviously you can't do LOL Or now I try to bargain with her.. if you take your medicine, I'll give you grapes..etc. Before that it is SO frustrating

Ok here is what I do with my dear child that it very stubburn...
I place him on his back on the floor. Put both of his arms beside his body. I put a knee on either side of his body with my butt on his chest (not sitting on him just there to keep him down.) With my knee beside his head he can not turn his face and I ahve two hands free to get the stupid meds down his throat. NOW...I have to keep his mouth open (using the siringe) so he is made to swallow it.
I had to take him to the ER one day and the nurse there told me that I needed to be a mom and tell him to take his meds (I used to put them in his sippy cup). I was PISSED but asked her to show me how to do it. YUP she wore all the meds! Then a second nurse came in and BOTH of them could not get him to take it! What ended up happening was that I was talking to the director of his daycare and she showed me this way. It works everytime! I have since taken him back to the ER for yet another ear infection and the nurse asked me to give him meds. When I went to do it she about FREAKED but I explained it all and when she watched me do it she was amazed at how easy it was. She said she was going to start showing moms this way.
GOOD LUCK!!!

I'm presuming it's pills?
Is there a reason you can't crush them up? (I don't know if some meds are particular about how they're given) - throw them in with some chocolate milk or other such sweet delectable.
*edit*
I do remember my mom having to give me pills for something when I was a kid - I remember quite clearly sitting to eat dinner, and just when we were going to have desert she taped me to the chair - wouldn't let me get up until I swallowed my dose.
I think I sat there, crying and taped up for maybe 6 hrs or something. LOL!! Seems vile and cruel, but a few times of that and I stopped complaining and spitting them out.

Sometimes we moms can be mean! I have done the holding down the child thing with my son. He is only 2 also. I can't wait until this years allergy season starts up again!
