Ok, my husband just got his orders and we are headed to Ft Hood come Nov. He graduates end of Oct, and was told he has 10 days leave, and then 10 days to report to Ft Hood. What now? LOL I am the type of person who needs to know what to expect, so all this hurry up and wait is very new to me. Is there anyone else from Ft Hood that could offer advice? We are going to apply for housing but the list is pretty long, like 6 months to a year, so we will live off base. Can anyone tell me about the different areas around there? We have 2 small kids, so a good school is very important. Can our kids still go to school on post if we live off base?? Any advice, words of wisdom etc will be greatly appreciated. This will be the furthest we have lived away from family, so it is a big chance.
Thanks,
Melissa

I can't help much, but I wanted to say good luck! PCS'ing can be very exciting. I like the idea of a chance to start over.

I don't know anything about Fort Hood, and it's been over 3 years since I've done it, so I can't offer much advice. We PCS this December and I can't wait.

I know the Navy has a class to help you prepare through fleet and family services - maybe you can find the counterpart for your branch? Even if you can't attend the class, I'm sure they can send you the informational packet they give out.

Also, you can probably contact Hood and get a welcome packet with lots of info.

Last but not least, military onesource has lots of articles, check lists, etc for helping you prepare to pcs.

I hope that was a little bit of help! I'm sure someone familiar with Hood can jump in and give you lots of info.

:goodluck

I am not from Ft Hood, but are you driving or flying?? Kids?? It is a stressful situation but it is actually easy when you get done. Kids/no kids are a big deal with explaining things. We PCSed for the first time with 3 kids and a cat. I am sure you will do fine!

There are not too many on post schools. I'm not sure about Ft Hood, or what the regulations would be. They may say the wait list is 6-12 months but you can always go to housing when you get there & see. We got into housing immediately after they told us it was a 6 month wait!
I don't know about Ft Hood, so I can't help you with much else. Sorry! Good Luck!
