For those of you who have recently left, do you have any tips for clearing housing? Should I go ahead and hire a cleaning team or can I do the required cleaning myself? How bad will they nit-pick at everything? We've lived here for almost 3 years now. The carpet is pretty ripped up on the stairs and the doorway to our room plus our bedroom door and one of our closet doors have large holes in them. Does anyone happen to know how much we'll be charged for the doors? We shouldn't have to pay for the carpet to be replaced or the walls to be painted since we've lived here more than 2 years, right? Or am I making that up? I know I have to patch up the walls and I have the cleaning list from the housing handbook but is there anything else I should focus on to avoid having to pay to move out of here?

The best route to go is to hire someone. When you do your pre-inspection, the person from housing will give you some phone numbers of house cleaners that have a good standing record with them. Expect to spend $250-$300. As for the damage, I can tell you that you will be charged for it, and it will be garnished from your dh's pay. Since you have also lived there for over 2 years, there might be some things considered "wear and tear" that you won't have to pay for, but the hole in the doors and maybe even the ripped up carpet will be coming out of your pocket, since that isn't normal wear and tear. When you do your pre-inspection, the person will tell you what to expect, and they will be writing it all down in their paperwork.

I agree with what Sarah said. When we moved out of there we hired a cleaner off the list they gave us and that was pretty much it. If you decide to hire one of the cleaners make sure you call and get price quotes b/c they seem to vary quite a bit.
