We have been TTC since June and I think I may have changed my mind. I really don't WANT to wait.... but I think I would like to lose a lot of weight before getting pregnant. I have a lot to lose and I think it would just be so much easier on my body if I lost weight first.

It has been a hard decision and I am not really 100% sure on what I want to do yet. I am really going back and forth between two ways of thinking:

1) If I lose weight it will be easier on my body as far as weight and I wont have to worry as much about diabetes, etc while I am pregnant. I have also heard that morning sickness can be worse in overweight people (although i have no idea how true that is).

OR

2) Get pregnant now and THEN lose the weight instead of putting in all that work to lose the weight just to gain baby weight and have to start over again. I am almost 30 and I would relly like to have a baby sooner than later.

I just really dont know. I am really on the fence.

My Dr. recommended a program offered by my Health Care Provider that is supposed to be very effective for people who have a really hard time losing weight (which I do). It will be really hard because it is basically a liquid diet (shakes) the entire time you are trying to lose which would be several weeks (like 15 weeks or so), but they say it is safe and you are monitored by your doctor the whole time, etc. You are supposed to lose between 3-5 lbs a week. I really would like to lose about 80 lbs.

I just dont know what to do. I talked to my GYN when I saw her last week and I asked her if I should lose weight before getting pregnant and at first she said yes....then a minute later she said "well I shouldnt really say that...." then she proceeded to tell me she just wasnt sure because she wasnt an OB Dr. and that obviously it is better on my body to lose weight but doesnt necessarily mean I HAVE to lose weight first. I saw my regular DR last week also and mentioned I was trying to get pregnant while I was talking to him about losing weight....but he never mentioned anything about waiting or trying to lose FIRST. He didnt recommend waiting, but I didnt specifically ask him either.

So I just dont know what I should do. I don't really know if can even ask to see an OBGYN since I am not pregnant yet.

I am totally confused on what I should do. I really want to do this program but it is super expensive ($110 a week plus other fees of about $750 in the beginning). I really need to do it and lose the weight, but I am afraid to spend all that money and effort and then gain it back with pregnancy. BUT I am scared that being overweight is going to be bad for my pregnancy as well.

If you read all of this, thanks for listening to my rambling :nutts

Has anyone been i a similar situation and had to make that decision? I could really use some advice on which road I should choose.

Gosh, I really dont know what to tell you as I have never been in either position(over-weight or ttc) but I hope that whatever decision you make that its a good one and I will think good thoughts for you either way!! :)

I read that you have a higher chance of having a preemie for every x-amount of lbs you weigh more than before your first pregnancy. My doctor confirmed it, but it was a year ago, so I have forgotten the details.

I'm working to get back to pre preg weight as well before we ttc again. It's a risk that I do not want to take.

I was between 260-270 when i got preggers w. DS. I had no complications with my pregnancy. Nothing not even morning sickness! DS came out weighing 9 6.6. But not everyone is the same. i can say that it has been a struggle to loose the weight after he was born...shoot it took me 3yrs to get off my duff. If your not morbidly like myself i wouldnt worry to much about it.
But like i said earlier everyone is differant. I wish you luck on whatever you choose! Both are fun! At least i found it fun to loose weight...i got to go shopping!!

Im over weight and didnt have any morning sickness.

I was WAY bigger when I had my dd and didnt gain nearly as much weight with her. With my ds I gained almost 100lbs :tears And didnt loose an ounce after he was born. With my dd I have lost all but ten pounds of my pregnancy weight.

BUT, with that being said, I would loose the weight first. One, because it will up your chances of getting pregnant. Two, because it will be easier for you to loose the baby weight after you give birth. Three, its by far the healthier thing for you and the baby :)

Even if you just loose a small amount of weight it will be better in the long run. I lost 30 lbs (it took a year) before I got pregnant with dd. But I wasnt loosing the weight to get pregnant. We had given up on having another baby.

I have read that it can be hard to get pregnant if you are very over weight (is kind of the situation I have) I had gestational with my last pregnancy. BUT I loose weight both times I am pregnant. I asked my Doc about it and she said some woman the babys are just burning machines for them. I lost 30 lb during my last pregnancy (5 years ago) but I gained it back, and then some :(

I would at least lose some weight it will make TTC easier. I was overweight prior to conceiving but had lost about 20 lbs right before I conceived. It helped a lot!

Thanks ladies...

I think my issue is that, if I decide to lose weight first, then I want to stop TTC until I am done. I dont want to just lose like 20-30 lbs and then get pregnant and have to stop the diet program after spending so much money on it (will be like $3,000 in program fees). I think the whole process of the program will take between 8-12 months depending on how fast I lose, so that is a long time to wait since I am wanting to be a mom, like right now! :lol

I am still continuing to go to the gym and trying to lose weight right now, but I am tring to decide whether I should go through the program w/ my health care provider now or after I have a baby and am really able to commit the 12 months to losing (since i have a lot to lose and dont want to gain it back after spending so much money on the program). I probably should have made the poll read "yes lose all the weight before trying" since that is what I meant.

I really appreciate your feedback ladies!
