My husband is looking at orders for NAB Little Creek and I was wondering if anyone could give me information on the high schools in the Virginia Beach School district. Can you recommend any of the schools in the area? Thanks in advance!

I don't know much about the high schools, but I hear a lot of good things about Kempsville High over the rest of the schools in the area...

We live in Va. Beach, but I really don't know much about the high schools. My oldest is in middle school so I should probably find out. The only thing I can tell you is that I've heard that Cox High School is one of the best in Va. Beach.

My daughter just graduated from Kempsville and it's a great school. Kellam and Cox are also great schools. :)

I have a senior at Tallwood high. It is in the Kempsville area as well.

LOVE IT!! My son was always a D student into 9th grade. we moved to Tallwood area and he is straight B's.

It is a very open school with large hallways and a lot to offer.

Don't forget to check into the special programs for VA Beach schools. For example, princess anne High has a criminal science program. As long as the student has transp. and is accepted, they can go from anywhere in va beach.

Cox now has a lot of gangs I hear. Ditto for Bayside and the Rosemont area.

Kempsville is still nice.

:P

Stay far away from Greenrun....and Bayside.

I think that you are mistaken about Cox High School. It's in a very affluent neighborhood off of Great Neck, and it's a really really good school.

I've lived in Va. Beach for 14 years total, and people look for housing to get into Kempsville, Cox or Kellam. :wink

I appreciate all of your advice. When we were stationed at NOB 5 years ago the high schools in Norfolk had such a bad rep so thats why we are thinking about moving to Virginia Beach this time. I just want a good safe school for my kids to attend and a nice safe neighborhood to live in as well.

Definitely stay away from Gang Run... oops I mean green run lol. Bayside isn't that great either. COx, Kellam, and Kempsville are all very good schools.

We just moved here and have a son in middle school. From the scores online most schools match grade for grade BUT Green Run is a HUGE no. Every school in the city is accredited so don't let that fool you. The best way IMO to look for a good school is to look at the crime in the area around the schools. If you go to www.vbschools.com you can find a TON of info.

Julie, I'm/We're stationed here. Or I'm always here, my husband is always deployed. The only school I'm familiar with is Green Run High School around the corner from me. It's an average public high school. FYI. I don't have children so not sure about elementary schools. I do know that for daycare on Holland Rd. there is Kindercare and the daycare (??drawing on blank on the name is it Play Place?) That on Holland in the plaza were the gay nightclub is (Rainbow Cactus). FYI. Thanks, Amanda

I agree with what the other girls said. :yes Stay away from Green Run.

Princess Anne High School is another good one. They have the higest academic scores in VA Beach right now.

Good luck!

I cant help you with the High School, my oldest is in the 7th grade at Larkspur and it is a ok school. I heard that Landstown and Kempsville and Salem High are good. I guess if you are trying to stay near Little Creek those schools would be to far away. Do you know what area you are looking to live in and are you going to buy or rent? The housing market here is crazy and expensive. GL

my sons goes to Birdneck and i LOVE it its an elementary we live in Oceana Housing. i absolultely love the schools that is one reason we won't move out of housing right now. we can't afford a home we like in this area with the same schools. being military though you can bring your kid to any VA beach school you want as long as you transport them and live in the district. you just need a waiver so even if you like in a different school area and you want to drive to kempsville you can. at least that is how it was explained to us. good luck i love the beach, i would never live in Norfolk with school aged kids.
