It looks like we might have to do check out the week between Christmas and New Years.
Has anyone ever done this? Did stand down and holiday vacations make it difficult? How about with the movers - did you have any problems getting a pack out date for that time?
I was hoping his command would let us go a little early, and we could check in a little early. But the command says :tsktsk.
His orders say depart in Dec, but because of the 30 day thing with the report no later than date, that means we can't check out until Christmas Day at the earliest. I don't get why his orders are written this way. :screwy

no experience with it, but that really has to suck. I can't imagine having to pack up and move just after christmas. I take it you are doing little to no christmas decorating this year! I can't imagine that.

We did a move during Thanksgiving...( I know it's not Christmas) and it went very smooth. Our driver packed our stuff in Fla and just kept it on his truck since he was going to Arizona to visit family, then he dropped it off in CA the following week when we got there.
Check in/out was pretty good, though we did have to go back to housing to sign some of the paperwork later because one of the guys was on leave.

Yup, no decorating here. Except maybe my little mini tree.
And I'm working on Xmas shopping already - I want it all wrapped, packed, and sent way before so I don't have to deal with it as moving approaches.
Here's another question: If our report date is no later than Jan. 23, but orders are to detach in December, would it matter if we waited until the first week of January to detach? Would they let us do that?
I don't know if I even want to do that, because I really want to claim any excess moving expenses on our 2007 taxes, since we won't have as much mortgage interest to claim this year. But, I want to know all my options.

we checked out during christmas stand down once. they got back less than 2 weeks before christmas and i think he checked out around january 3rd. we had no problems getting the packers movers (other than having to work around new years). he didn't have to report until the end of january so that wasn't a problem.
the only issue we ran in to was that, since they had just gotten back and it was stand down people kind of dropped the ball on getting us our DLA (all the paperwork and stuff that had to be filled out/processed). we wound up getting it a day or two after we left i think so it wasn't TOTALLY horrible.
